Basketball tournaments bounce in again on Thursday, with a 16-school field set for the annual
Northern Rio Grande Invitation at Pojoaque

Wrestling dual meets Wednesday at Capital High and St.
Michael’s, and the annual Al Salazar Memorial
Invitational Friday-Saturday at St. Michael’s

Happy New Year, and if you thought the high school basketball tournaments ended after the Christmas and New Year holidays, think again.
Tuesday will have non district basketball games among the girls and boys, and wrestling takes over Wednesday in dual meets matching Belen at Capital and Los Lunas at Santa Fe High, both scheduled for 4 p.m. starts.
But on Thursday, the first tournaments for 2017 will tip-off at the Northern Rio Grande Invitational played at the Ben Lujan Memorial court at Pojoaque Valley, the Albuquerque Sandia Prep, the Wolf Invitational at Christian Life in Santa Fe, the Bean Valley Invitational, the Ruidoso Mountain Madness tournament, and the Aztec tournament.
All will continue on Friday and wrap up with the Saturday finals.
Also on Friday, the two-day annual Al Salazar Invitational at St. Michael’s will begin at 4 p.m. and include the host Horsemen, Santa Fe High, Capital, Pojoaque, Los Alamos, Espanola and West Las Vegas.
Also on Thursday, Bernalillo’s girls will play Santa Fe Prep at 5:30 p.m., and at 5, Pojoaque is at Socorro.
On Friday, there will be swimming at the Genoveva Chavez Community Center when the annual Horsemen Invitational starts at 4 p.m. and including the host Horsemen/Lady Horsemen, Santa Fe High, Santa Fe Prep, Desert Academy and Taos. It will resume Saturday morning at 9.
On tonight’s basketball menu the boys will feature Santa Fe High at Moriarty (at 7), Pecos at Santa Fe Prep (at 7:30), Los Alamos at Pojoaque (at 7:30), Las Vegas Robertson at Penasco (at 6:30), and Ruidoso at West Las Vegas (at 6).
The girl’s slate tonight has Santa Fe High at Albuquerque St. Pius X, Bernalillo at Capital, Pecos at Santa Fe Prep, and West Las Vegas at Moriarty. All but the 6 o’clock contest at Moriarty are scheduled for 7.
The pairings have been set for the opening round of the Northern Rio Grande tournament.
GIRLS: 9:30 a.m., Pecos vs. Mesa Visa.
12:30 p.m., McCurdy vs. Dulce.
3:30 p.m., Escalante vs. Mora.
6:30 p.m., Questa vs. Penasco.
BOYS: 11 a.m., Mora vs. Escalante.
2 p.m., Questa vs. Penasco.
5 p.m., Dulce vs. Mesa Visa.
8 p.m., McCurdy vs. Pecos.
Every school in this tournament has both its girl’s and boy’s teams in the field of 16.
Friday girl’s basketball finds Capital at Santa Fe High in a 7 p.m. start, and Espanola at Farmington at 4. The boys have Los Alamos playing at Belen at 7 p.m. the same night.
In the Ruidoso Mountain Madness on Thursday, Pojoaque’s boys face Laguna-Acoma and Taos takes on Moriarty. There’s also St. Pius X’s boys at Santa Fe High and St. Michael’s at Albuquerque Academy, both slated to start at 7 p.m.
