Apparently the Bernalillo High girl’s softball team doesn’t intend to follow the path taken by their basketball team. Whereas the Spartans suffered with a 5-24 overall record on the court, which included 14-straight losses, they also yielded the most points in their class, and went 3-5 in District 4-5A.

But Bernalillo is now outdoors with the yellow ball and has a championship after claiming the annual Roseanne Noedel Memorial tournament Saturday with a 12-1 rout over Moriarty at the St. Michael’s Christian Brothers Athletic Complex. This team did not get away to a smooth start, losing three of its first four. But it now has the feel of winning in extending its streak to four games and advance to 5-3.

Shutouts were evident in the opening five games. The Spartans lost three of them and won the other two. But with their pitching coming together, they have now allowed only seven runs while scoring 43 during this streak.

How fitting that sophomore Shauncey Masawietstewa, a member of the basketball team, came through with the latest impressive start in the circle. Her team backed her up well at the plate, upping a 5-1 lead with a six-run fourth inning. As it has in winning all three of its tournament games, Bernalillo started fast and was able to win via the 8-run mercy rule when the contest was called after five innings.

As for Masawiestewa, she retired the first six batters she faced and the Pintos (5-3) scored their lone run on a pair of errors and a single.

Third place went to Espanola Valley (3-4) in a 16-8 romp over Raton (1-3) in another mercy-rule contest.

Fifth place went to host St. Michael’s (2-2) in its 3-1 triumph over Pojoaque Valley (1-5). Santa Fe High (3-6) turned back Albuquerque Academy (1-6) by a 5-3 score to finish seventh.

Under new head coach Billy Perdue, Jr., the Lady Horsemen got to .500 after opening with a pair of setbacks.

They came up with three runs in the first inning, and that was all starting pitcher Lynnsey Glidewell, a sophomore right-hander, needed. She was reached for seven hits, struck out six and walked two, giving up the lone run in the third inning to secure her second-straight victory.

Athena Archuleta led the host team with two hits, but the damage in the opening frame came on singles from seniors Dominique Martinez and Erin Gantt, followed by sophomore Michelle Salazar’s two-run double. The Lady Horsemen had six hits in all.

The Elkettes did load the bases with one down in the fifth, but Gildewell responded with a strikeout and outfield fly to end the threat.
