Capital City Track and Field to include 15 schools and memorial events

A field of about 15 schools will be running, jumping, throwing at Saturday’s annual Capital City track and field Invitational at Santa Fe High.

Those that have already qualified for state will be out to improve their times, jumps, throws. Those who have not will be competing in order to also qualify for the state.

It’s a meet in which several events will be in memory of those that contributed to the sport. There’s the Charlie (Cocoa) Maxwell boy’s 4 x 100, the Serena Houser Memorial girl’s 100 hurdles, the Margie Wurst Memorial 1,600 run, and the Susan Lanphere Memorial girl’s high jump.

There will no preliminaries in the running events, all are finals, with the girl’s 3,200 the initial race scheduled to start at 9:15 a.m. That will be followed by the boys running the same distance. Right after, it will be the girl’s 4 x 100 relays, followed by the Charlie (Cocoa) Maxwell Memorial boy’s 4 x 100.

Featured in the field events will be the shot put, discus, javelin, high jump, long jump and triple jump. They will begin at 8:30 with the girl’s pole vault.

Each contestant will be allowed three throws or jumps, with the top seven advancing to the finals, where they will receive three more attempts.

In addition, scratch lines will be employed, but first tries will be measured so that all athletes get a mark. There will be no courtesy measurements after the first attempt.

In the discus, the girls must throw at least 60 feet, the boys 80. In the high jump, the girls must start at 4-2, the boys at 5-0. In the boy’s shot put, the scratch mark is 30 feet. In the boy’s triple jump, the scratch mark is 32 feet, and in the boy’s triple jump, it is 32 feet. In the girl’s long jump that should end around10:30 a.m., the scratch line is 12 feet.

In each event, it’s the girls followed by the boys.

The running events are the (two) hurdles, the 100, 200, 400 and 800 meters, the 1,600 and 3,200, the 4 x 100, 4 x 200, 4 x 400 and 1,600 sprint medley relays, the Special Olympics 100 meters, and the final events, the weight man/women relays, and the coaches relay.

Schools scheduled to compete are host Santa Fe High, Capital High, Santa Fe Indian School, Santa Fe Prep, St. Michael’s, Taos, Silver, East Mountain, Cottonwood Classical Prep, Espanola Valley, Pojoaque Valley, Rio Grande, Bernalillo, Laguna-Acoma, and Santa Fe Waldorf.

Pecos was also on the entry list, but the Panthers will be instead competing at the Fort Sumner Foxes/Vixens, Invitational.

The points for the relays are 10-8-6-4-2-1, for the individual events, it’s 7-5-4-3-2-1.

Four entries per event are allowed for each school, and one relay team for each school.

Reminder: ¼ inch spikes are required. Longer spikes will damage the track.
