Golden Spike Classic at Santa Fe High

Annual two-day Golden Spike Classic track and field at Santa Fe High toes the line Tuesday at a scheduled 3 p.m., with the same time Wednesday

Fourteen schools are expected for the event with no preliminaries, only finals

It’s that week where area track and field teams compete in Santa Fe, with the two-day Golden Spike Classic running Tuesday and Wednesday at Santa Fe High, followed by Saturday’s Jaguar Invitational at Capital High.

The annual Golden Spike hosted by the Demons and Demonettes and directed by their head coach, Peter Graham, is scheduled to start at 3 o’clock both afternoons.

All events are finals. No preliminaries. On Tuesday, the menu will include the field events, the discus, shot put, pole vault, long jump, and high jump. The triple jump and javelin will be contested Wednesday.

The first-day track events will have the 3,200 leading off, followed by the 4 x 100 relay, the 100/110 hurdles, the 100-meter dash, the 800, the 4 x 200 relay, and the 400 run.

Wednesday will bring the 1,600 run, the 300 hurdles, the 1,600 sprint medley relay, the Special Olympics 100 dash, the 200 meters, 4 x 400 relay, and the grand finale, the weight man’s/women’s relay.

Expected in the field will be Santa Fe High, Santa Fe Prep, Santa Fe Indian School, Santa Fe Waldorf, St. Michael’s, Capital, Desert Academy, Academy of Technology And Classics, Bernalillo, Pecos, East Mountain, Espanola Valley, West Las Vegas, and possibly Taos, which had its scheduled meet at Aztec cancelled this past Saturday.

The two-day weather report could start with rain and a high of only 43 degrees on Tuesday, but Wednesday calls for sunny skies and a high of 50.

The Saturday Jaguar Invitational is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. The slate and list of entries will be provided later in the week.

But first comes the Golden Spike Classic.
