The day before Saturday’s District 2-6A doubleheader against visiting Albuquerque Manzano, Santa Fe High head coach Tony Martinez had some positive praise for Monarch’s right-hander Mitchell Parker.

Well, he was right, the junior is good, so good that he tossed a 6-0 one-hitter over the Demons in game one, and Martinez now heads to Saturday’s season-finale doubleheader at Albuquerque Eldorado with 11 losses in the last dozen starts.

The lone win came in a 17-3 rout over 4A neighbor St. Michael’s, but in district it’s a different game as Santa Fe High has now lost all eight of its starts there, and is 9-14 overall.

After Parker’s gem in which he struck out 16, walked four and yielded just a single to Jacob Martinez, the Monarchs concluded with a 5-1 win to up their overall record to 14-7 and 5-3 in district. They are a good bet to make the post-season tournament.

Parker was in a scoreless game after two innings, but his team then went 1-2-3, one in the third, two in the fourth, three in the fifth. He threw 94 pitches.

He was helped at the plate by senior Blaze Tenorio’s pair of doubles that drove in two runs. Manzano swiped six bases in the twinbill.

Santa Fe High senior Jacob Romero took the loss against Parker. He went the first innings, struck out four, made 73 pitches and gave up seven hits.

Senior James Catanach worked the last two frames.

In the second game, Manzano scored four times in the first, added one in the third, and kept the Demons at bay again with just a run in the fourth. Here, Parker led the hit parade with two safeties and three RBI. His team had 10 hits in all.

Sophomore Manny Martinez took the mound setback, striking out seven in five innings on 56 pitches. Catanach relieved once again.

The Capital and Espanola Valley District 2-5A doubleheader Saturday at the Sundevils has not submitted results, so it’s a mystery as to who did what in the clash of the district’s bottom two teams.

The Jaguars brought an overall record of 2-18 (0-7 in district). The Sundevils were at 3-19 and 1-6 and had lost six in a row, while Capital had a losing skein of 10. In district play, the Jags have scored only 12 runs, Espanola 15.

And in a previous get-together, the Sundevils prevailed 9-5 at Capital.

But their junior varsities are having fun. In a doubleheader between the two at the Jaguars’ diamond last Friday, Espanola first outscored the home side 20-19 in was a long and wild contest of lead changes and ties in the first game.

But in game two, either the batters were worn out or the pitching was tremendous. Seven innings brought a scoreless tie, than was called. The JV Jags are 0-10-1 overall and 0-5 in district. Espanola is a wee bit better at 1-12-1 and 0-3.

At least their score was found.

But the varsity, has anyone seen the varsity results?
