Santa Feans seek to portray DeVargas and La Reina de las fiestas

SANTA FE—As Santa Fe prepares to commemorate the 305th Fiesta de Santa Fe, three men and three women will vie for the roles of Capitán General y Gobernador Don Diego de Vargas and La Reina de la Fiesta de Santa FeTM, respectively, at the annual Contest Selection, at 7:00 pm, Thursday, May 4, 2017 at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center. Admission to this event is $10. Tickets will be available at the door.

Dean Milligan, President of Santa Fe Fiesta, Inc. announced that Francesca “White Shell” DeAguero (Oga Tsaé) was appointed by Nambe Owingeh Pueblo to serve as the 2017 Native American Princess.

Each spring the Fiesta Council holds a contest in which local men and women compete to secure the prestigious roles of General Don Diego de Vargas and La Reina de Santa Fe, said Milligan. The prospective contestants are judged on delivering an English and Spanish speech, and are questioned, in both English and Spanish, on their knowledge of historical events surrounding the Fiesta de Santa Fe, he said.

Domingo Pablo Ortiz y Salazar

Domingo Pablo Ortiz y Salazar, 27, is a Native Santa Fean and the Son of Ralph Pablo Ortiz and Doris L. Salazar y Ortiz and Husband of Kayla Marie Rendon y Ortiz. He is a 2008 Graduate of St. Michael’s High School. Domingo attended New Mexico State University and studied Accounting. He also completed an Accounting Specialist Certificate Program through the Santa Fe Community College. Domingo is employed with The Bryan Doerner State Farm Agency.

Domingo is a Board Member of The Interfaith Community Shelter at Pete’s Place and an active Member of the Caballeros De Vargas. Domingo is on the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis Parish Pastoral Council as well as a Confirmation Catechist for the Youth

Ministry. Domingo is proudly sponsored by the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi and the Caballeros De Vargas.

David Monserrat Jaramillo y Estrada

David Monserrat Jaramillo y Estrada, 26, is a 2008 graduate of Santa Fe High School. He is the son of David Tomas Jaramillo and Virginia Olivia Jaramillo, and has one sister, Carmelita Trinidad Jaramillo. He proudly works for the City of Santa Fe in fleet management. David is also attending school part time pursuing a degree in Business Administration and Education. In his spare time, he performs magic for various community events. The Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #2811 proudly sponsors David.

 

Marvin Gallegos y Mercure

Marvin Gallegos y Mercure, 49, was born and raised in Chama New Mexico. He graduated in 1986 from Esclante High School. Marvin attended Northern New Mexico Community College and graduated degree with an Associate of Applied Business in 1989.

He later moved to Santa Fe and worked in the Hotel Business for almost 15 years. In 2004, he started working for FedEx Ground, as a package handler then became Senior Operational Admin, he will be completing 13 years with the company. He is a parishioner of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church for 14 years. Marvin is being sponsored by A – Line Logistics and K & M Delivery.

 La Reina Candidates

Hope Andrea Quintana

Hope Andrea Quintana, 26, is the daughter of Robert and Pamela Quintana, she is the youngest of three children. She is a 2008 graduate of St. Michael’s High School and a graduate of New Mexico State University. In 2013 she earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering with minors in Nuclear Energy, Biochemistry, and Mathematics and was awarded Outstanding Graduate in the College of Engineering. She earned a Master of Science in Chemical Engineering in 2015 and is currently a Research and Development Engineer for Plutonium Science programs at Los Alamos National Laboratory.

Hope volunteers as a catechist for confirmation at the Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi and Cristo Rey and is the head cheer coach at Los Alamos High School. In addition to helping the youth she volunteers in her parish community as Chair of the Pastoral Council at Cristo Rey. Hope has enjoyed dancing with the local dance group “Bailé Español” for the last 21 years. She is proud and humbled to be sponsored by Cristo Rey Catholic Church.

Jordan Epiphany Montoya y Aragon

Jordan Epiphany Montoya y Aragon, 20, was born and raised in Santa Fe, NM. She is the eldest daughter of Camille Aragon and Randy Montoya. Her two sisters are Alayna and Olivia Montoya. She is employed as a para-professional with Santa Fe Public Schools, working with visually impaired students. She is attending New Mexico Highlands pursuing a degree in Education.

Jordan is an active member of the Ministry of Lectures at the shrine of Our Lady of Guadalupe parish. When she’s not dancing or teaching with Los Ninos De Santa Fe y Compania, she coaches youth volleyball from the ages of 12 to 14 at the Genoveva Chavez Community Center. Jordan is being sponsored by the La Sociedad Folkorica.

Jessica Sarah Luz Sisneros y Leyba

Jessica Sarah Luz Sisneros y Leyba, 22, is the daughter of Esperanza Leyba and Johnny Sisneros. Jessica was born and raised in Santa Fe, NM and is a 2012 graduate of Santa Fe High School. She is currently attending the Santa Fe Community College where she is pursuing her Associates in Applied Science in General Studies.

Jessica is a parishioner at the Cathedral Basilica of St Francis of Assisi. She is proudly sponsored by Los Caballeros de Vargas.

The 2017 Don Diego de Vargas and La Reina de la Fiesta de Santa Fe will be named and each will receive their respective regalia on Saturday, May 6, 2017 at the annual Baile de Mayo at the Santa Fe Community Convention Center.

The Baile de Mayo features The Jordan Baca Band. Admission prices are $15 per person. Doors open at 6:00 pm. Tickets will be available for purchase at the door.

The 2017 Santa Fe Fiesta is scheduled for the week of Sept. 1 – 10, 2017 on the Historic Santa Fe Plaza. The 2017 Don Diego de Vargas y La Reina de La Fiesta de Santa FeTM will be knighted and crowned, respectively, at 3 p.m., on Sunday, June 25 at the Cathedral Basilica of Saint Francis of Assisi, by the 12th Archbishop of Santa Fe, The Most Rev. John C. Wester, followed by the annually procession to Rosario Chapel for the annual Novena de La Conquistadora.
