Santa Fe High, Capital High softball teams off until Saturday, St. Michael’s plays today at Pojoaque Valley, Indian School at Sandia Prep

Jaguars right in the mix in quest of District 2-5A

Good news for the Santa Fe High softball team as it winds down in the tough District 2-6A.

Not only do the Demonettes get some time off from actual competition when they don’t play again until Saturday’s doubleheader at Clovis, but they won’t have to face top-ranked, undefeated Albuquerque La Cueva again, at least not this season.

Visiting La Cueva shut down Santa Fe High, 20-0 and 16-0, in a recent doubleheader to put the Demonettes at 0-4 in district and 7-10 overall.

But now head coach Randy Montoya’s team has a chance to come out on the winning side when it finishes up with Clovis, Albuquerque Manzano and Albuquerque Eldorado.

Clovis is 10-17 overall, 0-2 in district. Manzano is 8-6 and 2-2. Eldorado is 10-2 and 0-0 in district. The remaining team, Albuquerque Sandia, is 11-2 and 0-4, and has already defeated Santa Fe High twice.

But Capital High, under head coach Sig Rivera, is right in the mix in District 2-5A. It plays a non district doubleheader at Raton Saturday, and follows with a district visit from Albuquerque Del Norte on April 19.

“We’ve got a confident group,” said Rivera. “They play hard and love to see their names in the newspapers. We’ve got some work ahead of us, but I see us maybe playing for first place when Los Alamos visits on the 29^th for a doubleheader.”

Presently, the Jaguars are 4-1 in district and 10-7 overall. They began by winning their first four starts, lost five in a row, and have now won six of their last eight that includes two straight.

They are on top the standings with Los Alamos, which is 10-8 overall. Del Norte is 3-11 and 0-4, Espanola 8-10 and 3-1, and Albuquerque Academy 2-13 and 1-5.

“We’re on target to win our district and make the state tournament,” Rivera said. “The girls are feeling it.”

In 2-4A, St. Michael’s has to put together a few wins to move up in the standings. Under new head coach Billy Perdue, Jr., it is 6-10 overall and 1-3 in district. The Lady Horsemen are at district rival Pojoaque Valley this afternoon. The Elkettes are 7-9 and 1-2. Wednesday they travel to Albuquerque Hope Christian for a non district test.

Resting in first place at 4-0 (11-5 overall) is Las Vegas Robertson. Right behind at 11-6 and 5-1 is West Las Vegas. Then there’s Taos at 3-9-1 and 0-4. St. Michael’s has won three in a row, one over Taos and a doubleheader sweep over non district opponent Albuquerque Sandia Prep.

Santa Fe Indian School, in 5-4A, won its last two via shutouts against non district opponent Mora, and play at district foe Sandia Prep today. The Braves are 11-6 and 0-1 in district. Sandia Prep is 0-0 in district and 3-13 overall.

They had lost four of six before defeating Mora, 13-0 and 15-0. Bernalillo is 10-7 and 1-0, and East Mountain at 9-3-1 and 0-0. After today’s game, Indian School doesn’t play again until April 25 being home to East Mountain.
