U.S. Senator Martin Heinrich guest on The Great Outdoors Show

The Great Outdoors is broadcast every Thursday morning at 8:30am with host Mike Michael

Today on the Great Outdoors-New Mexico show we had the distinct honor and pleasure to have on the show with us, Senator Martin Heinrich.  Senator Heinrich took time out of his busy schedule to visit with us about the executive order signed this week by President Trump that authorized a review of the designations of National Monuments by previous administrations under the Antiquities Act of 1906.  This review will impact two of the newly created National Monuments in New Mexico-Rio Grande Del Norte and Organ Mountains-Desert Peaks.

U.S. Senator Heinrich Martin

Senator Heinrich and 30 other Democratic Senators signed a letter in protest of this review.  During our visit, we spoke about how important these National Monuments are to the local economies and we spoke of the irony that the President’s rationale for this review is to investigate whether these designations are in the best interests of these local economies when in fact it was the local economies that “drove the bus” on getting these areas this designation here in New Mexico.

We also visited about the true economic opportunities outdoor recreation provides here in New Mexico and elsewhere.  Senator Heinrich vowed to keep up the fight against these efforts to roll back protections of our public lands.  We also spoke about his efforts to bring a very large Outdoor Industry Association Show to New Mexico that is leaving the state of Utah because of that state’s leaderships continued efforts to bring federal lands under local control’

Once again, we had a very nice visit with Senator Heinrich and are very grateful for the time he took out of his valuable time to speak with us today.
