Upcoming Prescribed Burns on Coyote Ranger District

Fire managers on the Coyote Ranger District of the Santa Fe National Forest are planning to conduct previously announced prescribed burns as early as Monday, April 24

The burns will be continuing through the rest of the week if conditions, including fuel moistures, predicted weather and air quality, remain favorable.

The two initial targets are the:

  • Mesa Poleo prescribed burn, 300 acres of hazardous fuels located 1.5 miles southwest of the community of Mesa Poleo and 3 miles southwest of Coyote and
  • Gallina Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI) treatment area, 500 acres located 1 mile south of Gallina off of NM Highway 96

Prescribed fires are one of the most effective tools available to resource managers for restoring fire-adapted ecosystems. These fires mimic natural fires by reducing forest fuels, recycling nutrients and increasing habitat diversity. The prescribed burns under consideration on the Coyote Ranger District are designed to reduce forest fuels, promote forest health and provide community protection. Prescribed fires are managed with firefighter and public safety as the first priority.

Smoke from the prescribed burn will be monitored to ensure that the New Mexico Environment Department’s Air Quality Bureau regulations are being met, and the information will be available to provide health advisories as necessary.

Smoke-sensitive individuals and people with respiratory or heart disease are encouraged to take precautionary measures. Information on air quality and protecting your health can be found online at the New Mexico Department of Health website at https://nmtracking.org/fire.
