New Mexico National Guard to host retirement ceremony for Brig. Gen. Juan Griego

SANTA FE, N.M. – The New Mexico National Guard will host a retirement ceremony for Brig. Gen. Juan Griego on Sunday, May 7, 2017, at 10 a.m. at the Regional Training Institute, Onate Military Complex.

Griego, a native New Mexican from Espanola, served for over 34 years.

Griego last served as the deputy adjutant general and was the principal liaison to senior military officials, various state and federal officials, the legislature, local governments, and community groups. He provided overall guidance and direction for state operations including business administration and facilities management and assumed full responsibility for the Adjutant General in his absence.

Griego was responsible for the care, welfare, safety, combat readiness, accountability and deploy-ability of 2,900 New Mexico National Army Guard Soldiers. He provided leadership and command oversight of two brigades, ensuring both are manned, equipped, and trained for deployment to meet the nation’s and the state’s needs. He also had command oversight of the Regional Training Institute to include numerous MOS qualification courses and NCO professional development courses.

He also led the Department of Military Affairs, the State Defense Force, the Civil Air Patrol and the New Mexico Youth ChalleNGe program, which provides formal education to at-risk youth.

Griego was commissioned in 1984 through the Reserve Officer Training Corps program at New Mexico State University. He has held a variety of positions including command at the company, battalion, and brigade levels and staff positions at the battalion, brigade and Joint Force Headquarters levels. He also served as the Deputy Chief, Joint Staff and the Land Component Commander.

In the civilian sector, Griego is a member of the Senior Executive Service, assigned as the Deputy Manager and Chief Operating Officer for the National Nuclear Security Administration’s Los Alamos Site Office where he manages the functions, responsibilities and authorities of the federal staff of approximately 130 employees. He is also serving as the Acting Site Office Manager responsible for administration of the $2 billion annual Management and Operations contract for the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) with a workforce of more than 10,000 people.
