Sleep Matters with Pat Donahue and Jessica Romero

Santa Fe Community College Respiratory Department is featured

By Santa Fe Today Staff | May 8, 2017

Jessica Romero, RRT, Director of Clinical Education for the Respiratory Department at SFCC, is Pat Donahue’s guest on Sleep Matters, which airs every 2nd and 4th Monday at 9am on KSWV radio 99.9 FM, 810 AM and KSWVradio.com. Pat Donahue, RRT, is Director of Southwestern Sleep Center, owned and operated by Southwestern Ear, Nose & Throat.

Jessica was born and raised in Santa Fe and graduated from the Respiratory Therapy Department at SFCC. Her father owns a durable medical equipment company which influenced her career path.

According to Pat, “Sleep medicine patients with obstructive sleep apnea have a chronic disease, and will probably use CPAP equipment for the rest of their lives.”  Today’s show is to highlight the commitment Respiratory Therapists have to setting patients up on CPAP, teaching them how to use the machine, keep it clean and see that their masks are properly fit.

There are many different sleep disorders that adversely affect sleep. A sleep center can identify the disorder.  CPAP therapy that is required to treat obstructive sleep apnea is ordered from the sleep center and the durable medical companies’ Respiratory Therapist set it up.  These set ups can occur at the office or in your home.

Durable medical equipment companies are required to have a Respiratory Therapist and the therapists take pride in seeing that the new CPAP patient is successful in CPAP use.

If you’re interested in becoming a respiratory therapist, SFCC is having an event on June 14th “Tour the Department”.
