Hopewell Lake temporarily closed due to wildfire

HOPEWELL LAKE – Hopewell Lake in northern New Mexico is closed to anglers and other visitors until further notice to accommodate helicopters obtaining water to fight the Bonita Fire in the Carson National Forest.

Department of Game and Fish and U.S. Forest Service staff will be at the lake to oversee the operations and closure, officials said Friday.

The lightning-caused Bonita Fire has burned approximately 4,000 acres since it started June 3 in the El Rito Ranger District. Officials said it was 25 percent contained Friday.

For fire information, please call the Bonita Fire Information Line, (575) 758-6345 from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
