Santa Fe Public Schools Announces District Administration Appointments

Dr. Veronica C. Garcia, superintendent of schools, announces Channell Wilson-Segura and Vanessa Romero as the Executive Directors of School Support for Santa Fe Public Schools. Mrs. Romero and Mrs. Wilson-Segura will supervise and support principals in their effort to create an environment that raises expectations and promotes high academic performance for all of our students in SFPS.

Channell Wilson-Segura earned her professional degrees from the University of New Mexico, including a bachelor of arts in English and dance, a master of arts in secondary education, an educational specialist in educational leadership with administrative licensure. She is currently working toward her doctorate of education in educational leadership.  Mrs. Wilson-Segura’s research interests center on transformational leadership models/frameworks looking specifically at the levels of change that have the greatest impact to turn low-performing school communities into high-achieving schools of excellence. She has served as the principal of Capital High School since 2011.

“Being the principal at Capital High School for the past five years has provided me with the most humbling professional, relational, and educational experience.  I am honored to continue to be in a position to make decisions that force effectual action to support what is right for our kids in the Santa Fe Public Schools and I will never forget the immense responsibility that comes with it,” Mrs. Wilson-Segura reflects.

Dr. Garcia added, “Mrs. Wilson-Segura is a well-respected proven leader who successfully changed a school culture. I am happy to have her on our leadership team supporting our principals.”

Vanessa Romero is a product of the Santa Fe Public Schools. During her 14 year career in education, Mrs. Romero has served in a variety of capacities. After a successful teaching career, Mrs. Romero was selected as the assistant principal of Agua Fria Elementary where she had an immediate positive impact on school operations and the school’s well-known dual language program. Soon after, she was asked to help lead a $3 million dollar school turnaround grant at Ramirez Thomas Elementary. After a brief tenure as principal at Salazar Elementary, Mrs. Romero returned to Ramirez Thomas Elementary where she and the staff have continued to sustain reform efforts and see improvements in overall student achievement.

Mrs. Romero stated, “We have highly capable and dedicated teachers and principals across the district. Our students work hard every day and the parents of our community expect the best for their children. To that end, I am I’m extremely excited to work closely with our schools to offer support in the initiatives of our district.”

Dr. Garcia praised, “Mrs. Romero will bring her unique and effective signature style of leadership to the position. We are fortunate to have her on the team.”
