Attend our Spanish Market Artists’ Reception 2017 to meet BYRON MARTINEZ, a native of Chimayó, New Mexico and a self-taught wood carver. Bryon creates original works using traditional techniques in carving. Juried into Spanish Market for the first time in 2011, he received First Place with the Leo Salazar Award in the Unpainted Bultos Category. This great accomplishment made it a very memorable and exciting first year in the Spanish Market!
His grandfather, Apolonio Martinez, greatly influenced Byron’s carving. He can remember as a child watching his grandfather Apolonio sit quietly carving on his little stool. His grandfather received “Best of Show” in the 1969 (Woodcarving) Spanish Market and carved till the age of 86.
Byron’s inspiration comes from his faith and from his beautiful wife, Felicia. She has been very instrumental in his art, his biggest supporter, and his biggest critic. He also credits all of his family and friends who have shown their support.
