New Mexico Musicians Coalition to set the tempo for positive action

Players and singers perform for Peace and Progress, September 10

Albuquerque, NM: A new and progressive coalition of New Mexico musicians will take the stage for social justice with a Peace and Progress Fest, from 5:00 to 8:00 pm, Sunday, September 10 at the Albuquerque Center for Spiritual Living, 2801 Louisiana Boulevard NE. The Fest will feature back-to-back performances by as many as 30 or more leading local R&B, jazz and blues artists. No tickets needed; suggested donation $10.

Along with non-stop music, Fest-goers can look forward to good food, fun activities for the kids, and easy opportunities to connect with progressive groups working on a range of issues, from immigration to gender and racial justice to the environment. “Music has a long history in common with movements for social change and justice – as something that can help people come together and feel inspired,” explains guitarist Dimi DiSanti. “We started the New Mexico Musicians Coalition as a way to continue that tradition, and the Peace and Progress Fest is a first step.”

A well-established artist in his own right, DiSanti will play at the Fest in company with other talents known to Albuquerque and Santa Fe audiences. Among them: Chris Dracup, Patti Littlefield, Arlen Asher, Jeez Laweez, Tracey Whitney, Michael Herndon, Kari Simmons Vickerman, Dianna Hughes, Glenn Kostur, Robb Janov, Joanie Cere, Joe Daddy Warner, Wendy Beach, Marietta Benevento, Jim Ahrend, and Steve Figueroa. And that’s just a partial list: “We have an incredible group of artists lined up,” says vocalist Patty Stephens, also slated to perform. “It’s going to be a whole lot of fun!”

Organizations planning to be on hand to offer information about their work and how to join their causes include Power Through Peace, New Mexico Progressive Coalition, Indivisible (Albuquerque, Nob Hill, and Santa Fe), the Albuquerque Center for Peace and Justice, Refugee Well-Being Project, Progressive Democrats of America, and OLÉ NM.
