Catches of the week
- Coyote Creek: Grace Thorn, 4, of Boys Ranch, Texas, caught her first limit of trout Sept. 19. She was using worms.
- Tingley Beach: Maverick Barrera, 4, of Albuquerque, caught and released a largemouth bass Sept. 22. He was fishing the Bob Gerding Catch and Release Pond and using a crank bait modified with a single barbless hook.
The following reports came in late but deserve a mention:
- Laguna del Campo: Paul Sanchez of Albuquerque caught a 25-inch rainbow trout Sept. 17. He was using salmon eggs.
- Rio Grande River: Marcus Devlin, 16, of Belen, caught a 30-inch, 10-pound catfish Sept. 16. He was using chicken liver.
- San Juan River: Jesse Soveranez, 14, of Farmington, caught a 20.75-inch trout Sept. 2. He was fishing the bait waters and using night crawlers.
- Ute Lake: John Claypool, 79, of Logan, caught and released a 10.5-pound blue catfish Sept. 17. He was running a trotline baited with crayfish.

Sept. 26
Northeast
Charette Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Clayton Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. The water was quite murky from recent rains in the area.
Cimarron River: Stream flow near Cimarron on Monday was 29.3 cfs. Fishing on the river was good using worms, bead-head pheasant tail nymphs, bead-head hare’s ears and wooly buggers. Trout fishing at the Gravel Pit Lakes was fair to good using salmon eggs and PowerBait.
Conchas Lake: Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was slow with just a few reported by anglers using tubes, worms and jigs. Fishing was good using shrimp, worms, cut bait and liver for catfish. We had no other reports.
Costilla Creek: Stream flow on Monday below Costilla Dam was 49.4 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Cowles Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Coyote Creek: Fishing was good using worms, salmon eggs and small bead-head nymphs for trout.
Eagle Rock Lake: Fishing was very good using Zeke’s trout bait, PowerBait, worms, salmon eggs, Pistol Petes and spinners for trout.
Eagle Nest Lake: Fishing for trout was good trolling spinners on lightweight tackle and using PowerBait from the shore and from anchored boats. Fishing was good using worms for perch. Fishing was good using large spinners and spoons and perch colored crank baits for northern pike up to 30 inches. We had no other reports. Kokanee snagging season opens Oct. 1.
Gallinas River: Fishing was good using bead-head prince nymphs, bead-head pheasant tail nymphs, copper John Barrs, worms and Fire Balls for trout.
Hopewell Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Lake Alice: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Lake Maloya: Trout fishing was good using Pistol Petes, PowerBait and wooly buggers. Fishing was good using worms for perch. Fishing pressure was light.
Los Pinos River: Fishing was good using bead-head pheasant tail nymphs, worms and salmon eggs for trout.
Maxwell Lake 13: Fishing was slow for all species.
Monastery Lake: Fishing was very good using Fire Balls and PowerBait for trout.
Morphy Lake: Trout fishing was slow.
Pecos River: Streamflow near Pecos on Monday was 47.9 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using San Juan worms, worms, salmon eggs and spinners for trout.
Red River: Stream flow below the hatchery on Monday was 62.1 cfs. Fishing was good using salmon eggs, PowerBait, wooly buggers, poundmeisters and copper John Barrs for trout.
Red River City Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Rio Grande: Stream flow on Monday at the Taos Junction Bridge was 252 cfs. Fishing was good using peacock nymphs, copper John Barrs, wooly buggers, BWOs, elk hair caddis, PowerBait and night crawlers for browns, cutbows and rainbow trout. A few smallmouth bass were caught by anglers using streamers and spinners. Fishing was fair to good using chicken liver, shrimp, cut bait and night crawlers for catfish. We had no other reports.
Rio Hondo: Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 17.7 cfs. Fishing was fair using caddis, copper John Barrs, salmon eggs and worms for trout.
Rio Mora: As of Monday, stream flow near Terrero was 12.6 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Rio Pueblo: Stream flow near Penasco on Monday was 6.82 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Santa Cruz Reservoir: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Shuree Ponds: Fishing was good using Pistol Petes and olive and brown wooly buggers for trout.
Springer Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Storrie Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.
Stubblefield Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Ute Lake: Fishing was very good using stink bait, liver, cut bait and night crawlers over baited holes for catfish. Fishing for all other species was slow with just a few white bass and walleye catches reported. The surface water temp was in the low to mid 70s.
Winsor Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Northwest
Abiquiu Lake: Fishing was good using tubes, grubs, 6-inch worms, spoons, square bill crank baits and top water lures for smallmouth bass. Fishing was good using 4-inch spoons and curly tail grubs tipped with night crawlers for walleye. Anglers fishing for smallmouth bass and walleye also picked up a few crappie. Fishing was good using worms, liver, homemade dough bait for catfish. We had no other reports.
Animas River: Water flow below Aztec on Monday morning was 197 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Albuquerque Area Drains: Fishing on the Albuquerque Drain was fair using night crawlers for catfish and a few small bass. We had no other reports.
Bluewater Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was light.
Brazos River: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Canjilon Lakes: Closed by the U.S. Forest Service until further notice.
Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 699 cfs and 709 cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was good using bead-head wooly buggers, copper John Barrs, custom tied flies, spinners, night crawlers, Fire Balls and PowerBait for brown and rainbow trout. We had no reports from below Abiquiu. The river from the USGS gauging station to the confluence of the Rio Nutrias is now catch and release only using single barbless hook artificial flies and lures. The kokanee snagging season opens October 1 from El Vado Lake to the west boundary of the Rio Chama Wildlife and Fishing Area.
Cochiti Lake: Fishing was fair using crank baits, worms, jigs and jerk baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. A few white bass were caught by anglers trolling crank baits. Fishing was slow to fair using shrimp, chicken liver and homemade dough bait for catfish. We had no other reports.
El Vado Lake: Fishing was fair using worms, jigs and tubes for smallmouth bass. We had no other reports. The kokanee snagging season opens October 1.
Fenton Lake: Fishing was fair to good using worms, wax worms, PowerBait, spinners and small spoons for brown and rainbow trout. Susan Berg reported catching an 18-inch brown trout this past Saturday. She was fishing next to the boat ramp and using a wax worm.
Heron Lake: Fishing was fair using salmon eggs, worms and PowerBait for rainbow trout. We had no other reports. Fishing pressure was light. The lake and Willow Creek are closed to kokanee snagging Oct. 1-Nov. 9 and no kokanee may be in possession while fishing during this period.
Jackson Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez River near Jemez Springs on Monday morning was 12.4 cfs. Trout fishing on the Jemez was fair for anglers using worms and salmon eggs. Fishing on the Cebolla was good using worms, small spinners and Fire Balls. Fishing on the San Antonio was good using ant patterns, worms and salmon eggs. We had no other reports.
Laguna del Campo: Fishing was a bit slow with just a few trout caught by anglers using salmon eggs and PowerBait.
Lagunitas Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Lake Farmington: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Manzano Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.
Navajo Lake: Fishing was good using top water lures, crank baits, jerk baits, tubes, creature bait and senkos for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was good using swim baits, top water lures, jerk baits and crank baits for northern pike. Fishing was good using worms and grubs for perch. Fishing for kokanee salmon was slow. We had no other reports. The surface water temp was in the high 60s. Kokanee snagging season opens Oct. 1 (excluding designated no-wake areas).
San Juan River: Stream flow on Monday morning was 641 cfs. Fly-fishing action through the Quality waters was good for anglers using olive wooly buggers, small emergers, red annelids, San Juan worms, dead chickens and small bead-head pheasant tail nymphs. Trout fishing through the bait waters was good using night crawlers, PowerBait, Fire Balls, San Juan worms and jerk baits.
Seven Springs Brood Pond: Fishing was very good using PowerBait, salmon eggs, Fire Balls, worms and Pistol Petes for trout.
Tingley Beach: Fishing at the Youth and Central ponds was slow to fair using hot dogs, stink bait, beef liver and shrimp for channel catfish. Fishing at the Bob Gerding Catch and Release Ponds was slow with just a few trout and largemouth bass caught by anglers using small emergers and single hook crank baits. We had no other reports.
Trout Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Southwest
Alumni Pond: Fishing was slow for all species.
Bear Canyon Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Bill Evans Lake: Fishing was fair to good using worms, liver and homemade dough bait for catfish. Fishing for all other species was slow.
Caballo Lake: Fishing was fair using crank baits and slab spoons for white bass. Fishing was slow to fair using liver and night crawlers for catfish. We had no other reports.
Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing was good using shrimp and cut bait for catfish. The best reports have come from anglers fishing from late evening through the early morning hours. Fishing was fair using senkos, jigs, worms, jerk baits, top water lures and crank baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair using crank baits, top water lures, spoons and curly tail grubs for white bass. The best white bass action has been south of McCrae Canyon. Fishing for walleye was sporadic at best trolling Wally Divers and Flicker Shad. We had no other reports. The surface water temp was in the mid to upper 70s.
Escondida Lake: Fishing was slow but a few catfish were caught by anglers using hot dogs, chicken liver and worms. We had no other reports.
Gila River: Stream flow on Monday morning was 33.4 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Glenwood Pond: Fishing was good using PowerBait and Fire Balls for trout.
Lake Roberts: Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait for trout. We had no other reports.
Percha Dam: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Quemado Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using PowerBait for trout. We had no other reports.
Rancho Grande Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Rio Grande: Stream flow below Elephant Butte Monday morning was 1,280 cfs. Fishing below Elephant Butte and Caballo was good using night crawlers, shrimp, minnows, beef liver, chicken liver and cut bait for catfish. Fishing was slow to fair using curly tail grubs, spoons and minnows for white bass. We had no other reports.
Snow Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Young Pond: Fishing was slow for all species.
Southeast
Alto Lake: Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait for trout. We had no other reports.
Bataan Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Black River: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 57.4 cfs. We had no reports from anglers.
Blue Hole Park Pond: Fishing was good using salmon eggs, PowerBait and worms for trout. We had no other reports.
Bonito Lake: Closed until further notice by the city of Alamogordo due to fire damage.
Bosque Redondo Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Bottomless Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Brantley Lake: Anglers are required to catch and release all fish here as high levels of pesticides have been found in some fish. Fishing was fair to good using jigs, curly tail grubs, flukes, tubes, senkos, chatter baits and spinner baits for largemouth bass and white bass. Fishing was fair using liver, homemade dough bait and night crawlers for catfish. We had no other reports.
Carlsbad Municipal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Chaparral Park Lake: Fishing was fair using worms and hot dogs for catfish.
El Rito Creek: Fishing was good using small spoons, PowerBait and worms for trout. We had no other reports.
Eunice Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.
Green Meadow Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Greene Acres Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Grindstone Reservoir: Fishing was good using wooly buggers, worms, PowerBait and spinners for smallmouth bass, rainbow trout and perch.

Lake Van: Fishing was slow but there were a few catfish caught by anglers using night crawlers and chicken liver.
