Catches of the week
- Bluewater Lake: Luca Barreras 9, caught and released a 32-inch tiger musky Sept. 24. Sophie Barreras, 9, caught and released a 39-inch tiger musky Sept. 24. They are from Albuquerque and were using large spinners.
- Fenton Lake: C J Williams of Rio Rancho caught a 22-inch rainbow trout Sept. 29. He was using a worm. Ivan Etsate, 9, of Albuquerque, caught a 16.5-inch rainbow trout Sept. 30. He was using trout nuggets. Father and son, Alan and Austin Aguinaldo of Albuquerque, caught 19 and 20-inch rainbow trout Oct. 1. They were using homemade, hand tied streamer patterns.
- Glenwood Pond: Paul Sherrill, 71, of Silver City, caught his very first limit of trout Sept. 25. He was using a variety of colors of PowerBait.
- Sumner Lake: Johnny Thomas of Fort Sumner caught and released a 26.5-inch, 5-pound, walleye Sept. 30. He was using shad.
- The following reports came in late but deserve a mention:
- Bluewater Lake: Bryson Shimenas, 15, of Albuquerque, caught and released a 35-inch, 12-pound tiger muskie Sept. 9. He was using a swivel minnow.
- Seven Springs Brood Pond: Dominic Dominguez, 5, and Diego Dominguez, 10, of Albuquerque caught their limits of trout within one hour Sept. 22. They were using salmon eggs and stink bait.

Northeast
Charette Lakes: Trout fishing was slow.
Clayton Lake: Fishing pressure was extremely light and fishing was slow.
Cimarron River: Stream flow near Cimarron on Monday was 25.3 cfs. Fishing on the river was fair using worms, salmon eggs, pheasant tail nymphs and wooly buggers. Trout fishing at the Gravel Pit Lakes was fair using salmon eggs and PowerBait.
Conchas Lake: Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was slow with just a few reported by anglers using tubes, worms and jigs. Fishing was slow to fair using shrimp, homemade dough bait, cut bait and liver for catfish. We had no other reports.
Costilla Creek: Stream flow on Monday below Costilla Dam was .83 cfs. Check this one out next spring.
Cowles Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Coyote Creek: Fishing was fair using worms, salmon eggs and small bead-head nymphs for trout. The water was a bit murky from recent rains.
Eagle Rock Lake: Fishing was very good using PowerBait, worms, salmon eggs and Pistol Petes for trout.
Eagle Nest Lake: Fishing for trout was fair trolling spinners on light weight tackle and using PowerBait from the shore and from anchored boats. Fishing was good using worms for perch. Fishing was good using large spinners, crank baits and spoons for northern pike. Kokanee snagging was slow.
Gallinas River: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Hopewell Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Lake Alice: Fishing was good using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout.
Lake Maloya: Trout fishing was fair to good using Pistol Petes, PowerBait and salmon eggs. Fishing was good using worms for perch. Fishing pressure was light.
Los Pinos River: Fishing was good using bead-head pheasant tail nymphs, worms and salmon eggs for trout.
Maxwell Lake 13: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Monastery Lake: Fishing was very good using Fire Balls and PowerBait for trout.
Morphy Lake: Trout fishing was fair using PowerBait, spinners and Pistol Petes. The lake level came up quite a bit with recent rains.
Pecos River: Streamflow near Pecos on Monday was 305 cfs. Fishing slowed considerably due to the high flows but it should pick up as flows get back to normal.
Red River: Stream flow below the hatchery on Monday was 103 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using salmon eggs, PowerBait, wooly buggers, small bead-head pheasant tail nymphs and copper John Barrs for trout.
Red River City Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Rio Grande: Stream flow on Monday at the Taos Junction Bridge was 502 cfs. Fishing was fair using wooly buggers, BWOs, elk hair caddis, PowerBait and night crawlers for browns, cutbows and rainbow trout. Fishing was fair to good using chicken liver, shrimp, cut bait and night crawlers for catfish. We had no other reports.
Rio Hondo: Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 27 cfs. Fishing was fair using caddis, copper John Barrs, salmon eggs and worms for trout.
Rio Mora: As of Monday, stream flow near Terrero was 111 cfs. Fishing was slow due to high water conditions.
Rio Pueblo: Stream flow near Penasco on Monday was 68.9 cfs. Fishing was slow due to high water conditions.
Santa Cruz Reservoir: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Shuree Ponds: Fishing was fair using olive and brown wooly buggers for trout.
Springer Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Storrie Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.
Stubblefield Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Ute Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Just a few smallmouth bass and largemouth bass were caught by anglers using jigs, worms and creature baits. We had no other reports. The surface water temp was in the high 60s.
Winsor Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Northwest
Abiquiu Lake: Fishing was fair using tubes, grubs, worms, spoons, square bill crank baits and top water lures for smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair using spoons and curly tail grubs and spinners tipped with night crawlers for walleye. Fishing was slow to fair using worms, liver, homemade dough bait for catfish. We had no other reports.
Animas River: Water flow below Aztec on Monday morning was 433 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Albuquerque Area Drains: Fishing on the Albuquerque Drain was fair using night crawlers for catfish and a few small bass. We had no other reports.
Bluewater Lake: Fishing was slow but there were a few tiger muskies caught by anglers using large in line spinners and crank baits. The water was clearing.
Brazos River: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Canjilon Lakes: Closed by the U.S. Forest Service until further notice.
Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 706 cfs and 392 cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was fair using bead-head wooly buggers, night crawlers, Fire Balls and PowerBait for brown and rainbow trout. We had no reports from below Abiquiu. The river from the USGS gauging station to the confluence of the Rio Nutrias is now catch and release only using single barbless hook artificial flies and lures. The kokanee snagging season opens Oct. 1 from El Vado Lake to the west boundary of the Rio Chama Wildlife and Fishing Area.
Cochiti Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits, topwater lures, creature baits and worms for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was fair using shrimp and chicken liver for catfish. We had no other reports.
El Vado Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Fenton Lake: Fishing was very good using worms, wax worms, PowerBait, Fire Balls, spinners, streamers and small spoons for brown and rainbow trout.
Heron Lake: Fishing was fair using salmon eggs, worms and PowerBait for rainbow trout. We had no other reports. The lake and Willow Creek are closed to kokanee snagging Oct. 1-Nov. 9 and no kokanee may be in possession while fishing during this period.
Jackson Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez River near Jemez Springs on Monday morning was 56.6 cfs. Early last week, trout fishing was very good using mop flies, copper John Barrs, salmon eggs and worms on the Cebolla, Jemez and San Antonio. Then the rains came and slowed everything down.
Laguna del Campo: Fishing was slow to fair using Pistol Petes, Super Dupers, salmon eggs and PowerBait for trout.
Lagunitas Lakes: Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait, Pistol Petes and wooly buggers for trout.
Lake Farmington: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Manzano Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Navajo Lake: Fishing was fair to good using top water lures, crank baits, jerk baits, tubes, creature bait and senkos for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was good using swim baits, top water lures, jerk baits and crank baits for northern pike. Fishing was good using worms, spinners and grubs for perch. We had no other reports. The surface water temp was in the high 60s. Kokanee snagging season opened October 1 (excluding designated no-wake areas).
San Gregorio Lake: Ernie Lucero of Albuquerque reported on good fishing here last week. He and two others caught their limits of trout including one 17-inch fish caught by Ernie. They were using worms.
San Juan River: Stream flow on Monday morning was 616 cfs. Fly-fishing action through the Quality waters was good for anglers using San Juan worms, wooly buggers, red annelids, min mac midges and small bead-head pheasant tail nymphs. There was some baetis activity but it was sporadic. Trout fishing through the bait waters was good using night crawlers, gold spoons, PowerBait, Fire Balls and jerk baits.
Seven Springs Brood Pond: Fishing was very good using PowerBait, Fire Balls and worms for trout.
Tingley Beach: Fishing at the Youth and Central ponds was slow to fair using hot dogs, stink bait, beef liver, homemade dough bait and shrimp for channel catfish. We had no other reports.
Trout Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Southwest
Alumni Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Bear Canyon Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Bill Evans Lake: Fishing was fair using worms, liver and homemade dough bait for catfish. Fishing for all other species was slow.
Caballo Lake: Fishing was slow with just a few white bass caught by anglers using spoons and minnows.
Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing was good using shrimp and cut bait for catfish. Fishing was fair using senkos, jigs, worms, top water lures and crank baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. The worms worked best when rigged whacky style. Fishing was fair using crank baits, top water lures and Kastmasters for white bass. The best white bass action has been at the south end of the lake. Fishing for walleye was sporadic again this past week with the best action reported by anglers using Wally Divers and Flicker Shad. We had no other reports. The surface water temp was in the mid 70s.
Escondida Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Gila River: Stream flow on Monday morning was 42.2 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Glenwood Pond: Fishing was very good using Fire Balls and assorted colors of PowerBait for trout.
Lake Roberts: Fishing was good using PowerBait, worms and salmon eggs for trout. Anglers using worms also picked up a few catfish. We had no other reports.
Percha Dam: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Quemado Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.
Rancho Grande Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Rio Grande: Stream flow below Elephant Butte Monday morning was 1,210 cfs. Fishing below Elephant Butte and Caballo was fair to good using night crawlers, shrimp, minnows, beef liver, chicken liver and cut bait for catfish. Fishing was fair using curly tail grubs, spoons and minnows for white bass. We had no other reports.
Snow Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Young Pond: Fishing was slow for all species.
Southeast
Alto Lake: Fishing was good using PowerBait, Fire Balls and small spinners for trout. We had no other reports.
Bataan Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Black River: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 18.4 cfs. Fishing was slow for all species.
Blue Hole Park Pond: Fishing was good using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.
Bonito Lake: Closed until further notice by the city of Alamogordo due to fire damage.
Bosque Redondo Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light.
Bottomless Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Brantley Lake: Anglers are required to catch and release all fish here as high levels of pesticides have been found in some fish. Fishing was very good using gold Kastmasters, curly tail grubs and crank baits for white bass. Fishing was good using 6-inch worms, jigs, tubes, senkos, chatter baits and top water lures for largemouth bass. We had no other reports.
Carlsbad Municipal Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.
Chaparral Park Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using liver and hot dogs for catfish.
El Rito Creek: Fishing was good using Fire Balls, PowerBait and worms for trout. We had no other reports.
Eunice Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Green Meadow Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.
Greene Acres Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Grindstone Reservoir: Fishing was very good using wooly buggers, worms, PowerBait, salmon eggs and small Kastmasters for rainbow trout. A few perch were caught by anglers using worms.
Jal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Lake Van: Fishing was slow to fair using homemade dough bait, chicken liver and Charlie’s blood bait for catfish. We had no other reports.
Oasis Park Lake: Fishing was fair using worms for bluegill and small smallmouth bass. Fishing for catfish was slow but a few were caught by anglers using worms and hot dogs.
Pecos River: Stream flow below Sumner Lake on Monday was 89.9 cfs. Fishing was slow to fair using night crawlers, liver and cut bait for catfish. We had no other reports.
Perch Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.
Ruidoso River: Stream flow at Hollywood was 18.2 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Santa Rosa Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits, tubes, crawdad imitations, sweet beavers, worms, jigs and chatter baits for smallmouth bass. We had no other reports.
Sumner Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using tubes, senkos, top water lures, worms and crank baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair using liver, night crawlers and homemade dough bait for catfish. Fishing was fair using worms for carp. We had no other reports.
