Catches of the week
- Albuquerque Drain: Desiree Flores, 17, of West Covina, Calif., caught a 20-inch, flathead catfish Oct. 10. She was using chicken liver.
- Bluewater Lake: On Oct. 14, Nathan Orona of Albuquerque caught and released four tiger muskies that ranged in size from 26 to 42 inches. He was using perch colored Storm swim baits and white and yellow chatter baits and fishing from shore.
- Fenton Lake: Jack Cisneros of Albuquerque caught and released a 20-inch rainbow trout Oct. 11. He was using salmon peach PowerBait.
- Pecos River: Jesse Silva, 13, Zakahryah Silva, 8 and Cypriana Silva, 6, of Belen, caught limits of rainbow trout Oct. 14. They were using gold flake salmon eggs.
The following reports came in late but deserve a mention.
- Grindstone Reservoir: Isaac Daniel Mendoza, 6, of El Paso, caught his first fish ever Oct. 2. It was a 14-inch rainbow trout and he was using orange PowerBait.
- Shuree Ponds: William Dixon, 8, of Albuquerque, caught a 3-pound rainbow trout Oct. 7. He was using a green wooly bugger under a bubble.

Oct. 17
Northeast
Charette Lakes: Fishing from boats was very good using PowerBait for rainbow trout up to 20 inches. Fishing was fair to good using 3/16-ounce gold and silver spoons for crappie. Fishing from the bank was slow. There was heavy vegetation along the shoreline and the water level was quite low.
Clayton Lake: Fishing was fair using worms and chicken liver for catfish. Fishing was slow to fair using PowerBait, worms and salmon eggs for trout.
Cimarron River: Stream flow near Cimarron on Monday was 12.5 cfs. Trout fishing was fair using small bead-head nymphs, worms and salmon eggs on the bottom. Fishing at the Gravel Pit Lakes was slow with just a few trout caught by anglers using worms and PowerBait.
Conchas Lake: Fishing was slow with just a few keeper size largemouth bass and smallmouth bass caught by anglers using senkos and tubes. We had no other reports.
Costilla Creek: Stream flow on Monday below Costilla Dam was 1.23 cfs. Check this one out next spring.
Cowles Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Coyote Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Eagle Rock Lake: Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait, worms, salmon eggs, Super Dupers and Pistol Petes for trout.
Eagle Nest Lake: Fishing from the bank was fair using PowerBait for rainbow trout. A few were also caught by anglers fishing from boats. Fishing was fair to good using worms for perch. Fishing was fair to good using large spinners, streamers, crank baits and spoons for northern pike. Kokanee snagging was slow.
Gallinas River: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Hopewell Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Lake Alice: Fishing was good using PowerBait, salmon eggs and spinners for trout.
Lake Maloya: Trout fishing was good using Pistol Petes, wooly buggers, copper John Barrs, PowerBait and salmon eggs.
Los Pinos River: Fishing was fair to good using pheasant tail nymphs, copper John Barrs and salmon eggs for trout.
Maxwell Lake 13: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Monastery Lake: Fishing was very good using custom tied nymphs, Fire Balls and PowerBait for trout.
Morphy Lake: Trout fishing was fair to good using PowerBait, salmon eggs, worms and Pistol Petes.
Pecos River: Streamflow near Pecos on Monday was 116 cfs. Fishing was very good using copper John Barrs, San Juan worms, wooly buggers, PowerBait, salmon eggs and worms for brown and rainbow trout.
Red River: Stream flow below the hatchery on Monday was 75.2 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using salmon eggs, PowerBait, small bead-head pheasant tail nymphs, wooly buggers and copper John Barrs for trout.
Red River City Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Rio Grande: Stream flow on Monday at the Taos Junction Bridge was 447 cfs. Fishing was good using Kastmasters, San Juan worms, streamers, leech patterns, night crawlers and PowerBait for brown and rainbow trout. A few northern pike were caught by anglers using large streamers. We had no other reports.
Rio Hondo: Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 26.4 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using poundmeisters, copper John Barrs and salmon eggs for trout.
Rio Mora: As of Monday, stream flow near Terrero was 76.2 cfs. Fishing was slow to fair using worms for trout.
Rio Pueblo: Stream flow near Penasco on Monday was 37.0 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Santa Cruz Reservoir: Fishing was fair using PowerBait, salmon eggs and small Kastmasters for trout.
Shuree Ponds: Fishing was fair to good using wooly buggers and Pistol Petes for trout.
Springer Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Storrie Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Stubblefield Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.
Ute Lake: Fishing for walleye was slow but improving as some anglers did well using slab spoons, blade baits and live minnows. They were jigging in 35 to 45-feet of water. Fishing was fair to good using slab spoons and blade baits for white bass. Fishing was very good using chicken liver and stink bait for catfish. We had no other reports. The surface water temp was in the mid 60s and the water was murky.
Northwest
Abiquiu Lake: Fishing from boats was fair using tubes, jigs, crank baits and swim baits for smallmouth bass. Fishing from the bank was slow. We had no other reports.
Animas River: Water flow below Aztec on Monday morning was 237 cfs. Fishing was slow to fair using worms, wooly buggers and Fire Balls for trout.
Albuquerque Area Drains: Matthew Dalzell of Albuquerque reported good fishing on the Albuquerque, Corrales and Isleta drains for largemouth bass with variety of baits. They included spinner baits, frogs, senkos, Ned rigs and crawdad imitations. He also reported catching a small northern pike and a big white bass on the Corrales Drain. Fishing on the Albuquerque Drain, Belen Drain, Corrales Drain and Peralta Drain was fair to good using worms for carp, catfish and panfish and chicken liver for catfish.
Bluewater Lake: Fishing was fair using swim baits, spoons, chatter baits and crank baits for tiger muskies. We had no other reports.
Brazos River: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Canjilon Lakes: Closed by the U.S. Forest Service until further notice.
Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 345 cfs and 408 cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was fair using bead-head wooly buggers, spinners, night crawlers and Fire Balls for brown and rainbow trout. Fishing below Abiquiu was slow and the water was quite murky. The river from the USGS gauging station to the confluence of the Rio Nutrias is now catch and release only using single barbless hook artificial flies and lures. The kokanee snagging season opened Oct. 1 from El Vado Lake to the west boundary of the Rio Chama Wildlife and Fishing Area.
Cochiti Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
El Vado Lake: Fishing was fair using worms for perch and smallmouth bass at the upper end of the lake. A few trout were caught by anglers using worms and PowerBait. Kokanee snagging was slow but anglers did spot several that were porpoising.
Fenton Lake: Fishing was very good using Pistol Petes, white mops, bead-head wooly buggers, PowerBait, night crawlers, Fire Balls and worms for brown, cutthroat and rainbow trout. Amanda Callantine of Albuquerque caught a 16-inch cutthroat trout on the 13th. She was using a night crawler.
Heron Lake: Fishing was fair using salmon eggs and PowerBait from the bank for rainbow trout. We had no other reports. The lake and Willow Creek are closed to kokanee snagging October 1-November 9 and no kokanee may be in possession while fishing during this period.
Jackson Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez River near Jemez Springs on Monday morning was 21.8 cfs. Fishing on the Cebolla was very good using wooly buggers, Pistol Petes, salmon eggs and worms. We had no other reports.
Laguna del Campo: Fishing was slow to fair using PowerBait for trout.
Lagunitas Lakes: Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait, salmon eggs, wooly buggers and olive and brown Pistol Petes for trout.
Lake Farmington: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Manzano Lake: Fishing was good using PowerBait and small silver and gold spoons for trout. We had no other reports.
Navajo Lake: Fishing was good using crank baits, tubes, creature baits, jigs, swim baits, chatter baits and senkos for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was very good using swim baits, jerk baits, spinner baits and crank baits for northern pike. Fishing was good using worms and grubs for perch. Kokanee snagging was slow with just a few taken by anglers snagging along the dam area. We had no other reports. The surface water temp was in the low 60s.
San Gregorio Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
San Juan River: Stream flow on Monday morning was 513 cfs and the water was clear. Fly fishing action through the Quality waters was good for anglers using small zebra midges, Krystal flash emergers, mini mac midges, dead chickens, parachute adams and small bead-head pheasant tail nymphs. Trout fishing through the bait waters was good using PowerBait, worms, Fire Balls, copper John Barrs and small spoons.
Seven Springs Brood Pond: Fishing was very good using spinners, PowerBait, Fire Balls and worms for trout.
Tingley Beach: Fishing at the Youth and Central ponds was fair to good using PowerBait, salmon eggs, worms and bead-head nymphs for trout. Fishing at the Bob Gerding Catch and Release Pond was slow to fair using custom tied nymphs and single barbless hook spinners for largemouth bass. We had no other reports.
Trout Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Southwest
Alumni Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Bear Canyon Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Bill Evans Lake: Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.
Caballo Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing was good using jigging spoons, blade baits and live bait for white bass. A few were also caught by anglers using crank baits. Anglers fishing for white bass also caught a few walleyes. Fishing was slow to fair using live bait, jigs, senkos, tubes, crank baits and creature baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing was very good using liver, homemade dough baits and night crawlers for catfish. We had no other reports.
Escondida Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Gila River: Stream flow on Monday morning was 41.2 cfs. Fishing on the West Fork was fair to good using small pheasant tail nymphs for trout. We had no other reports.
Glenwood Pond: Fishing was very good using PowerBait and Fire Balls for trout.
Lake Roberts: Fishing was good using Pistol Petes under a bubble, PowerBait, worms and salmon eggs for trout. Fishing was fair to good using dough baits, worms and liver. A few largemouth bass were caught by anglers using whacky worm rigs. We had no other reports.
Percha Dam: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Quemado Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Rancho Grande Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Rio Grande: Stream flow below Elephant Butte Monday morning was 0.00 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Snow Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week but the lake has been recently stocked and should fish well.
Young Pond: Fishing was slow for all species.
Southeast
Alto Lake: Fishing was good using PowerBait, Fire Balls, Pistol Petes and spinners for trout. We had no other reports.
Bataan Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Black River: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 12.5 cfs. Fishing was slow for all species.
Blue Hole Park Pond: Fishing was good using PowerBait, worms and marshmallow salmon egg combinations for trout. We had no other reports.
Bonito Lake: Closed until further notice by the city of Alamogordo due to fire damage.
Bosque Redondo Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Fishing pressure was very light.
Bottomless Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Brantley Lake: Anglers are required to catch and release all fish here as high levels of pesticides have been found in some fish. Fishing was good using gold Kastmasters and slab spoons for white bass. Fishing was good using jigs, tubes, senkos, Ned rigs and crank baits for largemouth bass. We had no other reports.
Carlsbad Municipal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Chaparral Park Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.
El Rito Creek: Fishing was good using Pistol Petes, Fire Balls, PowerBait and worms for trout. We had no other reports.
Eunice Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Green Meadow Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.
Greene Acres Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Grindstone Reservoir: Fishing was good using bead-head pheasant tail nymphs, copper John Barrs, Fire Balls, worms and PowerBait for rainbow trout. Fishing was fair using worms for perch and smallmouth bass. Fishing was slow to fair using chicken liver and worms for catfish.
Jal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Lake Van: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Oasis Park Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using worms for bluegill and a few small smallmouth bass. We had no other reports.
Pecos River: Stream flow below Sumner Lake on Monday was .01 cfs. Fishing was slow for all species.
Perch Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.
Ruidoso River: Stream flow at Hollywood was 20.2 cfs. Fishing was slow with just a few trout caught by anglers using salmon eggs.
Santa Rosa Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using Ned rigs in the trees, creature baits and spinner baits for largemouth bass. We had no other reports. The surface water temp was in the low 60s and the water was quite murky.
Sumner Lake: Fishing was slow for all species. Carol Bevel of Tijeras and George Torres of Stanley were here last Saturday and managed to pull in one walleye and two white bass before the wind forced them off the water. They were trolling perch and crawdad pattern crank baits. We had no other reports.
