Northern Foundation to Celebrate 22 Years of Giving in Española Valley

Española, NM – The Northern Foundation is holding its 22nd Annual Gala & Auction on Saturday, November 4, 2017, to celebrate over two decades of philanthropy in the Española Valley that has helped over 1500 students achieve their dreams of pursuing a college degree.
Themed “Dream, Journey, Thrive,” this year’s Gala & Auction will be held at the Ohkay Owingeh Convention Center, featuring a keynote address by Congresswoman Michelle Lujan Grisham, in addition to performances by New Mexican musical legend Cipriano Vigil and Moving Arts Española. The event is hosted and underwritten for the 7th consecutive year by TSAY Corporation.
The night will also feature a live and silent auction, where guests can bid on a Blaze King wood stove valued at $4,000 donated by Ralph Medina of Cordova, NM and other great items.
One hundred and five Northern New Mexico College students started the 2017-18 academic year with scholarships from the Northern Foundation totaling over $142,000. Additional grants available bring the total to nearly $170,000.
The Foundation has also introduced 20 new scholarships this year, making it the highest number of scholarships and grants moving through its doors since the Foundation’s inception in 1995.
“This is my favorite time of year: the scholarships have been awarded and are making their intended impact in our classrooms, donors are ready to meet their recipients, and the Foundation and College are ready to throw a big party to celebrate. I am looking forward to a great night,” said Northern Foundation Executive Director Terry Mulert.
Steve Cordova, a second-year environmental sciences student, received one of the Foundation’s competitive scholarships this year.
The scholarship “helps me pay for books and classes so I can go to school. Without it I wouldn’t be able to afford to go to school, so I’m grateful,” said Cordova.
Established in 1995, the Northern Foundation has a $3.5 million endowment and to date has given over $1.6 million in awards that have supported over 1500 students from the Española Valley.
