It began with a loss to Santa Fe Prep and ended with a loss to Santa Fe Prep.
Having said that, the 57-match district winning streak of the St. Michael’s girl’s soccer team is no more.
After a defeat to the Griffins in 2011, the Lady Horsemen dominated the district these rivals played in by not losing until Saturday morning at Sun Mountain Field. There, the Prep came away with a 5-3 victory to improve to 7-0-1 overall and 3-0 in 2-A/4A.
It dropped St. Michael’s to 8-5-1 overall and an unfamiliar 2-1in district.
The Griffins opened up a 4-0 halftime lead on four goals by freshman Anna Swanson, the Lady Horsemen responded with a strong second half, but it was too little and too late.
Both programs have been successful in the state tournament, St. Michael’s winning three times in six finals under Ed Velie, and Prep winning both finals it played in under Rennae Ross.
