Budget Agreement Statement re: Impact on New Mexico Students

By NEA New Mexico

Statement from NEA-NM President Betty Patterson on the legislative budget agreement just arrived at by the “Conference Committee” of three Senators (Smith, Cisneros, Neville) and three Representatives (Lundstrom, Larranga, Dodge):
“The 4.1% overall increase for public schools is most welcome, as are the small raises for school employees. Our focus remains on the students, and so we must keep fighting for the state to meet its obligations to sufficiently fund the schools so that all the supports students need for success are in place.”

For background: There was a great deal of discussion that spending on roads would “boost the economy” as if spending on education did not do so. Chief Economist for the National Education Association Richard Sims, Phd., provides this research showing the opposite is true: school spending creates a much greater short-term economic boost than does road building:

Here is the comparison of the impact of $1 million of spending on highways and road construction versus the same $1 million of spending on K12 education. As you can see, the job impact is about twice as strong, and the output and income effects are also substantially higher.
