District 5-4A girls might not be among the better districts in their class, but Santa Fe Indian School couldn’t care less.

Right now, the Braves lead the district at 5-0, and are on a 7-game win streak following Friday night’s 72-29 rout at Albuquerque Sandia Prep. At 18-4, they are the lone district team above .500.

Next comes Albuquerque Bosque School at 11-11, and even counting the Bobcats, it adds up to 23 wins and 64 losses among Bernalillo, Sandia Prep and East Mountain.

And the next stop for Indian School is Tuesday against visiting East Mountain, which is winless in district in four starts and won in a rout 70-18 in the previous meeting at Sandia Park.

Then comes a tough non district test at Moriarty Friday. The Pintos presently rank third in 4A and are 20-1, with the lone loss at Portales. They defeated Albuquerque Hope Christian in the district contest at home and play the Huskies again today in Albuquerque, then are home to the Rams (18-3) Tuesday.

Moriarty will provide a look of just how good could the Braves be outside of district. But Indian School head Christie Abeyta is taking things one game at a time.

“We play East Mountain next,” she said, “and then we will think about Moriarty. Right now, I’m happy about this win on the road and remain in first play. That would bring us the district championship and home court in the district tournament final”

The Braves moved out in front 20-5 in the opening quarter and increased it to 29-7 halftime into the second quarter. Once the second half began, Abeyta began to clear her bench.

“We have a lot of good players,” she said,” and it’s great to let them all play, which they did tonight.”

St. Michael’s took to the road to face Las Vegas Robertson, the first place team in District 2-4A, and had a miserable time against the 20-3 Cardinals who are now 5-0 in district.

The final score was 43-10, and the final result was never an issue. The Lady Horsemen trailed only 10-4 after one quarter, but did not score again until the fourth quarter, By then, Robertson led 29-4 at the half and 41-10 after three quarters.

St. Michael’s did outscore the Cards 6-2 in the last eight minutes, but it still dropped to 8-14 overall and winless in five district starts.

In regard to Robertson, Lady Horsemen first-year head coach Martin Esquibel said: “They are much bigger than us throughout the lineup, they are a lot quicker, they apply a good pressure defense, and we were in a rut from start to finish.”

Junior guard Carisa Padilla was St. Michael’s leading scorer with five points, half of her team’s total.

In 2-3A, Monte del Sol suffered the same scoring drought when it was routed 62-10 at Espanola McCurdy.

Also in 5-4A, Bosque School remained a game behind Indian School by defeating Bernalillo, 47-42,

In 2-5A, Espanola traveled to Albuquerque Academy and gained a 36-21, while Albuquerque Del Norte topped Los Alamos at home, 51-31.
In 4-4A, the toughest district in its class, it was Portales rolling over visiting Hope Christian, 57-31.

In 1-6A, it was Albuquerque Cibola in a 67-22 rout over visiting Piedra Vista. And in 2-2A, Elmer Chavez’ Mescalero Apache team, stayed on top its district and class by dominating Cliff, 78-45, to win its seventh straight and advance to 21-1.

Tucumcari, the lone girl’s undefeated team, is no longer that when it fell to Texico, 59-55.

This leaves the boys with the only unbeaten teams, 6A Las Cruces at 21-0, and 3A Texico also at 21-0. Jemez Valley in 2A is the only winless team in state at 0-18.

Tonight in 2-6A, Santa Fe High plays host to Albuquerque Sandia.
