ALBUQUERQUE – Administrator Linda McMahon, the head of the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA), announced this year’s Small Business Person of the Year winners from the 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico. Jasper Riddle, President of Noisy Water Winery in Ruidoso was named the SBA New Mexico Small Business Person of the Year. Riddle will join all other winners to attend ceremonies in Washington, D.C on April 29-30 where they will be honored with their individual award along with special recognition of the three runners-up and the naming of the 2018 National Small Business Person of the Year.

“It is my honor and distinct pleasure to announce the 52 winners from across the U.S. and Puerto Rico,” McMahon said. “These small business owners define entrepreneurial spirit and best represent the 30 million small businesses that are the backbone and economic engine of our economy. I look forward to welcoming the winners to Washington next month when they are officially honored for their achievements.”

Jasper Riddle was thrust into business ownership upon returning home to buy controlling shares in his family’s new company. The young entrepreneur transformed a struggling winery into a thriving employer in rural New Mexico.

Noisy Water Winery now has six locations, in four cities, employing 44 individuals and soon to hire 10 more. Riddle utilized counseling and training from SBA Resource Partner, the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) at New Mexico State University – Alamogordo. SBDC – Alamogordo Director Trish Livingston nominated Riddle for this honor. While a client of the SBDC, Riddle realized 38% growth in sales and 124% increase in net profit. He also converted his production facility to solar power with a USDA grant.

Riddle is a business leader invested in the well-being of his hometown. All proceeds from his “Tighty Whitey White” wine go to scholarships for high school students and he regularly donates to area non-profits. As a board member of four state and local economic development organizations, Riddle is committed to the growth of his community, region and state.

“Jasper Riddle, owner of Noisy Water Winery, is a shining example of what New Mexico small business is all about,” said SBA New Mexico District Director John Garcia. “I admire his courage, persistence and determination in the pursuit of excellence. He exemplifies how small businesses contribute to the well-being of their communities and I congratulate him on this prestigious honor.”

Each year since 1963, the president has issued a proclamation calling for the celebration of National Small Business Week. National Small Business Week is set as the first week in May, and this year the dates are April 29 – May 5.

After the national awards ceremony in Washington, D.C., Riddle will be recognized during the SBA New Mexico Small Business Week Awards Ceremony on May 2. The New Mexico ceremony is one of several local celebrations to be held throughout SBA’s 10 Regions and 68 Districts in honor of National Small Business Week.
