How Can We Feel Safer in Our Own Homes & Communities?

“How our state can improve public safety will be a major topic of discussion at forum”

The Co-Chair of the Criminal Justice Reform Subcommittee, Senator Sander Rue (R-Albuquerque Westside) announced today that New Mexico has been selected by the Bureau of Justice Assistance to host a New Mexico State Forum on Public Safety and Criminal  Justice Reform. This Forum is a continuation of the 50-State Summit in Public Safety that was held in November 2017 in Washington, D.C.

“How our state can improve public safety will be a major topic of discussion,” Senator Rue said. “We are looking to other states to see how they have successfully  tackled their crime problems and how they have approached criminal justice reform.”

Panel discussions will be facilitated by staff from The Council of State Governments (CSG) Justice Center. They will review New Mexico’s criminal justice system trends in a regional and national context.  A broad spectrum of stakeholders from the local and state level will discuss how New Mexico can improve public safety and outcomes for people in the state’s criminal justice system.

The panel discussions will be:

  • Improving Responses To People In The Criminal Justice System Who Have Behavioral Health Needs;
  • Advancing Strategies to Reduce Crime;
  • Promoting Strategies to Reduce Recidivism; and
  • Collateral Consequences of Criminal Convictions.

The forum will be held June 19, 2018, from 9:15 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. in the State Capitol, Room 307. The Forum is open to the public and a period for public comment will be included.
