Morphy Lake State Park Remains Closed in Support of Dam Renovation Project

By NM Parks

The Energy, Minerals and Natural Resources Department, State Parks Division advised that Morphy Lake State Park will remain closed for the upcoming dam renovation project being undertaken by the Acequias de San Jose y La Isla. The State Park was initially closed in accordance with the closure of the Santa Fe National Forest, which reopened on July 9.

The dam renovation project is scheduled for completion next spring. The dam at the lake was originally constructed in the 1890s to increase the lake’s volume for irrigation purposes. The State Parks Division, through an agreement with the State Game Commission, manages the land surrounding the lake for public recreation.

“The dam renovation project will ensure that the lake can continue to be used safely for irrigation and recreation by future generations,” said Deputy Director Toby Velasquez.

State Park officials remind boaters to always wear a lifejacket when out on the water and to be aware of weather conditions. For more information about YOUR state parks, call 888-NMPARKS or visit www.nmparks.com.
