SFCC announces Fall Semester Registration

Santa Fe Community College registration is ongoing for the Fall semester, which begins Aug. 20.  The college offers hundreds of credit classes from accounting to welding.

Interim president Cecilia Cervantes, Ph.D., said, “We want to make the community aware that the college realizes that many working adults are looking at ways to earn a certificate or degree. There are a variety of options such as evening, weekend and online programs that offer flexible scheduling.”

Students can complete many certificate programs in a year or less.  A recent study by Economic Modeling Specialists International (Emsi) indicates that Santa Fe area graduates with certificates will earn $31,000 at career midpoint, a significant increase over those with only a high school diploma who on average will earn $26,900 at career midpoint.  Santa Fe area graduates with an associate degree earn $35,600 at career midpoint.

Two popular certificate programs will be available completely online this fall:  Entrepreneurship, and Architectural and Interior Design Software.

SFCC offers an entirely online and accelerated certificate program in Entrepreneurship that students can complete in two semesters. As a changing global economy emphasizes the Internet and franchises, entrepreneurial opportunities have become a driving force of the world market. Students learn how to plan an entrepreneurial venture, create a business model, operate in a global setting and harness the advantages and far-reaching impact of e-commerce. As part of the program, students have opportunities to interact with successful entrepreneurs.

Students can now also pursue a certificate in Architectural and Interior Design Software online.  This program of study focuses on providing foundational technical skills in architectural and interior design software. Students gain primary knowledge of technical and visualization for the planning, creation and management of technical documents. Students use design-oriented critical thinking skills to solve basic technical documentation issues that arise in a professional firm setting. This program uses classroom learning, integrated class projects and employment situations to achieve knowledge and job skills.

Faculty member Jeremy Miers said, “We’ve gotten a lot of feedback from students who want to get these software skills online.  Students will be able to access AutoCad, ArchiCad and Revit software programs for free.”

Several other programs also emphasize online study such as the Teacher Alternative Licensure program and the Information Systems and Computer Science program.

The college also offers hundreds of hands-on classes on campus that integrate the college’s excellent laboratories, greenhouses, as well as art and film studios.

Certificates prepare students for entry-level work and/or supplement their skills for job advancement opportunities. Degree programs prepare students for a career and/or transfer to a bachelor’s degree program. Students can choose classes from the schedule of courses online at www.sfcc.edu.
