Some non district basketball games will still be on the menu, but for most, district play bounces in Tuesday.

The pre-district games usually serve as an example of how schools will do when district games make the scene, and where they can lead to the state tournament.

Ladies first, as the girls of Santa Fe High (6-10) are at Albuquerque High (2-11) Tuesday in 5-5A. The same night, Capital (4-7), also in that district, heads for Albuquerque Rio Grande (0-13).

On Wednesday, Santa Fe Indian School (16-2) is home to undefeated Robertson (17) in District 2-3A.

St. Michael’s (8-8) begins its District 2-3A schedule on Jan. 25 at Raton (5-10). Then there’s Monte del Sol (0-14) starting its District 2-2A slate on Jan. 28 when Tierra Enchanted (1-10) visits. On Jan. 31, Pecos (13-3) is home to Santa Rosa (6-9) in 7-2A.

Currently, Robertson is no doubt the team to beat in its district, as well as a contender for state honors in 3A. West Mesa (14-0) in 5A is the only other unbeaten girl’s team.

As for the boys, Tuesday will find Indian School (7-8) at Robertson (8-8) in 2-3A, and on Wednesday, Santa Fe High (12-3) is home to Albuquerque High (3-10) in 5-5A, St. Michael’s (9-7) gets a visit from Santa Fe Prep (7-6) in 2-3A, and in 5-5A, Capital (12-3) plays host to Albuquerque Rio Grande (4-8).

The Pecos boys (14-3) also open on Jan. 31 and will go against Santa Rosa   in a doubleheader at the Panthers gymnasium. Then there’s Monte del Sol (9-8) at Albuquerque Evangel Christian in the 2-2A opener on Jan. 25.

. . . In weekend games, the boys in the Albuquerque Hope Christian Invitational had Albuquerque St. Pius X turned back Taos, 70- 59, and the host Huskies rolled over Shiprock, 98-48, in the semifinals. In girl’s play in the same tournament, Los Lunas had no problem handing St. Pius X, 76-48, and Hope dominated Shiprock. 69-28, also in the semis.

In the Santa Rosa Classic, the boy’s semifinals had Newcomb edging Estancia, 52-50 in overtime, and the host Lions carried off a 100-67 rout over Santa Fe Prep. And Espanola Valley, the Sundevil girls turned back Capital, 67-46, but the Jaguar boys got past Espanola, 64-57.

All were non district contests in preparation for the upcoming district action.
