Capital High led off the closing day of the annual Roseanne Noedel Memorial softball tournament Saturday morning by turning back Pojoaque Valley, 13-5, for seventh place at St. Michael’s Christian Brothers Athletic Complex.

In the game for fifth place, it was Espanola Valley(5-2) against Raton (1-2) and that began close to the noon hour, with the Sundevils winning a tight 10-9 contest to drop the Tigers to 1-2.

In the third place game, host Lady Horsemen (2-4) lined up against previously undefeated West Las Vegas (8-1) and lost 15-10.

And in the late afternoon final, Bernalillo (3-1) ended Albuquerque Academy’s 3-game winning streak, and won its second in a row and thirdstraight Noedel tournament championship. The Chargers are now 5-3.

St. Michael’s trailed throughout its game, but did tie it at 10-10 after trailing 10-2 and pushing across eight runs in the fourth. The Dons had scored six times in the third.

Lady Horsemen senior shortstop Cia Alvarez advanced her batting average to .550 with a 4-for-5 game versus West Las Vegas. She drove home one run and scored twice.

Senior teammate Michelle Salazar was named to the all-tournament team by going 6-for-11 in the three games. Saturday, the first baseman came away with a pair of hits and drove in a run.

The next stop for the Lady Horsemen is a non district contest against visiting cross town rival Capital on Tuesday. The Jaguars are now 3-4 as they dropped Pojoaque to 1-5 and its fifth straight setback. Capital also swept the visiting Elkettes in a doubleheader last week.

It was the Spartans who handed the Dons their initial setback Friday, while the Chargers trounced St. Michael’s, 18-3. The same day, Capital lost to Raton, 8-6, to go 0-2 in the tournament.

St. Michael’s had defeated Pojoaque, 11-8, on Thursday’s opening day and Capital fell to West Las Vegas, 11-6. In an 8-inning contest, Academy edged Espanola, 5-3, and Bernalillo turned back Raton, 6-1, in the Tigers’ season opener.

Also coming away with two hits for the Lady Horsemen in the finale was sophomore Autumn Bonal, sophomore Athena Archuleta and 8th grader Lauryn Pecos, with Archuleta batting in two runs, Pecos knocking in one and Bonal adding a stolen base.
