CHRISTUS St. Vincent Receives a Four Star Rating From the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)

By CHRISTUS St Vincent

CHRISTUS St. Vincent is proud to announce that it has earned a Four-Star rating for overall hospital quality from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). Only six out of the 42 hospitals in New Mexico have a Four-star rating. CHRISTUS St. Vincent is the only full-service, comprehensive trauma hospital in Northern New Mexico to receive four stars. It is the highest CMS star rating that CHRISTUS St. Vincent has achieved.

“This rating is a reflection of our transition to an operational philosophy that emphasizes patient safety and associate engagement,” said CHRISTUS St. Vincent President and CEO, Lillian Montoya. “We’ve worked very hard in recent years to engage our associates in improving our quality of care, and the results of these efforts are evident. Not only do we have a higher quality of care and greater patient satisfaction, we have happier and more productive associates and a more cohesive team.”

CHRISTUS St. Vincent was recently voted by its Associates as one of New Mexico’s Best Places to Work. It has also received a Gold Level Family Friendly designation by Family Friendly New Mexico.

“I am incredibly proud of this team who comes to the hospital and our clinics each and every day to serve our patients,” Montoya said. “This star rating is a validation of their everyday commitment to caring for our community.”

The CMS Star Rating System uses statistically sound methodology to collect and score information from a wide variety of sources. It is designed to help consumers compare hospitals in an easy, understandable way. “This rating is also a reflection of the CHRISTUS St. Vincent Journey to Always,” Montoya said. “Our journey is about making continuous improvements by encouraging our Associates to “always” focus on those efforts that further improve and sustain high levels of quality care.”

The ratings are based on publicly reported data on more than 50 measures across seven aspects in quality of care including: Safety of Care, Re-admission, Patient Experience, Mortality, Effectiveness of Care, Timeliness of Care and Efficient Use of Medical Imaging. The Star Rating System is reported on the CMS Hospital Compare website.

The overall hospital rating summarizes a variety of measures on Hospital Compare reflecting common conditions that hospitals treat, such as heart attacks or pneumonia. Hospitals may perform more complex services or procedures not reflected in the measures on Hospital Compare.

The overall hospital rating shows how well each hospital performed, on average, compared to other hospitals in the U.S. The overall hospital rating ranges from 1 to 5 stars. The more stars, the better a hospital performed on the available quality measures. CHRISTUS St. Vincent is a private, not-for-profit hospital serving more than 300,000 people in seven counties in northern New Mexico.

CHRISTUS St. Vincent was founded in 1865 by the Sisters of Charity and is New Mexico’s first hospital and the largest private employer in Santa Fe offering over 34 specialized services and physician clinics. CHRISTUS St. Vincent was named one of New Mexico’s Best Place to Work. Our healing ministry is to improve the health and well-being of the communities we serve.
