Fenton Lake Closed to Ice Fishing Deteriorating Ice Conditions Deemed Unsafe

By NM Parks

Effective immediately, Fenton Lake is closed to ice fishing on the lake’s surface due to deteriorating ice conditions.
The State Parks Division and the NM Department of Game and Fish jointly manage the lake and surroundings. State Parks has the authority to close or restrict access to areas of parks, as well as to restrict, limit, or prohibit activities such as ice fishing as conditions require. Such actions are taken in the interest of public safety and resource protection.
“Public safety is our number-one concern,” said Park Manager Manny Sanchez. “Due to open water and deteriorating ice conditions, it’s critical that we manage for our visitors’ safety.”
Fenton Lake State Park continues to remain open for camping and other activities.
