Heron and El Vado Lakes Closed to Ice Fishing Deteriorating Ice Conditions Deemed Unsafe

By NM Parks

Effective immediately, Heron and El Vado Lakes are closed to all activities on the lake’s surface due to deteriorating ice conditions.

The State Parks Division manage the lakes and surroundings. State Parks has the authority to close or restrict access to areas of parks, as well as to restrict, limit or prohibit activities such as ice fishing as conditions require. Such actions are taken in the interest of public safety and resource protections.

“Due to several consecutive days of warm temperatures reaching the high 40’s the ice has deteriorated causing dangerous fishing conditions,” said Park Superintendent Anthony Marquez. “It is critical to keep everyone off of the ice for safety.”
