Historic Santa Fe Foundation presents a lecture, book launch, book signing, and reception for Frank Graziano on the event of his new publication Historic Churches of New Mexico Today. The talk, “Researching and Writing Historic Churches of New Mexico Today”, is scheduled for Tuesday, May 21, 2019 at 3pm in the sala of HSFF offices located at 545 Canyon Road, Suite 2, Santa Fe. There is no admission for the talk, but due to limited seating, RSVP is required.
Following the talk, we will host a reception and Graziano will sign copies of his new Oxford University Press book Historic Churches of New Mexico Today.
ABOUT THE LECTURE:
In this unique presentation, Frank Graziano brings the audience inside his experiences in native and Hispanic villages and discusses the creative process of crafting this research into prose narratives. The talk is illustrated with images from the fieldwork and excerpts from the book.
ABOUT THE BOOK:
This interpretive guide combines history and ethnography to represent living traditions at the adobe and stone churches of New Mexico. Each chapter treats a particular church or group of churches and includes photographs, practical information for visitors, and context pertinent to current understanding. Frank Graziano provides unprecedented coverage of the churches by combining his extensive fieldwork with research in archives and previous scholarship. The book is written in an engaging narrative prose that brings the reader inside of congregations in Indian and Hispanic villages. The focus is less on church buildings than on people in relation to churches — parishioners, caretakers, priests, restorers — and on the author’s experiences researching among them.
Graziano’s book includes chapters on Santuario de Chimayó; Churches along the High Road to Taos; St. Joseph Mission Church, Laguna Pueblo; San Esteban del Rey, Acoma Pueblo; Conflicts at Kewa and Isleta Pueblos; Churches along the Southern Rio Grande; St. Joseph Apache Mission, Mescalero; Mission Churches of Mora County; and San Francisco de Asís, Golden. He also includes a chapted entitled An Annotated Selection of Other Historic Churches.
ABOUT THE SPEAKER:
Frank Graziano’s books on religious cultures include The Millennial New World (1999), Wounds of Love: The Mystical Marriage of St. Rose of Lima (2003), Cultures of Devotion: Folk Saints of Spanish America (2007), Miraculous Images and Votive Offerings in Mexico (2016), and Historic Churches of New Mexico Today (2019), all published by Oxford University Press.
Graziano is the recipient of grants and fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Council of Learned Societies, the Fulbright and Fulbright-Hays programs, the John Carter Brown Library, Duke University, and the Rockefeller Foundation’s Bellagio Center, among many others. Between 1999 and 2016 he was John D. MacArthur Professor of Hispanic Studies at Connecticut College.
