Seeking Volunteers for Window Rock Trail Hike/Clean-Up

By SFNF

Santa Fe National Forest (SFNF) is looking for volunteers to hike to scenic Window Rock on Sunday, March 31, and help clean up the trail by picking up trash.

Part of a health initiative called Forest Your Health in partnership with El Centro Family Health Clinics, the Window Rock hike is an 8-mile roundtrip trek to one of New Mexico’s largest rock spans, a “window” weathered out of an igneous rock wall.

The hike will begin at 10 a.m. with a briefing at the Window Rock trailhead 11.5 miles north of Española on US Highway 84, and the day will end at 4 p.m.  Hikers should wear long pants, hiking boots or other sturdy closed-toe shoes, a hat and leather gloves.  Participants should bring a backpack with a sack lunch, at least three liters of water and sunscreen.  Light snacks will be provided.  Minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

Forest Your Health promotes healthy habits by encouraging community members in the Española area to hike, mountain bike and ride horses along area trails.

For additional information about the Window Rock hike, please contact Jennifer Sublett, Española District Volunteer Coordinator, at jasublett@fs.fed.us or 505.753.7331.
