Visiting Capital holds off St. Michael’s as its 10-0 lead became a 10-9 struggle in the non district softball adventure Tuesday afternoon

Both head coaches had the answers when visiting Capital held on to nip St. Michael’s, 10-9, in the non district softball meeting between the cross town rivals Tuesday afternoon.

While the Lady Horsemen, under new head coach Joe Alvarez, is now at 2-4 and still trying to equal last season’s third win, the Jaguars struggled in the circle before finally evening their record at 4-4.

It looked like a shoo-in for head coach Sig Rivera’s girls. Until then, their pitching had kept the home side without a run, and were now up 10-0 and in position to win in five innings via the 10-run mercy rule. Then they learned that it isn’t over until it is over.

But after the Lady Horsemen pushed across a run, it became 10-1 and the contest continued. In the sixth, Angelica “Jelly” Angel had a tough time in the circle by giving up six more runs on six hits, and Marley Cardenas barely made it out of the seventh after giving up two more runs.

“Our kids have to learn how to close out games,” Rivera said. “We can’t let anybody in or they are going to come back and finish the job.”

Alvarez, in turn, said his team has to continue to work on its defense that allowed Capital to build such a big lead.

“We gave it to them,” he said. “There would be a walk, an error, and they’d then get a hit. Again, it was another walk, another error, and another hit. If we can buckle down and keep them to three outs without putting people on base, those hits wouldn’t count.”

Jag newcomer Angel, a junior, continued her hot hitting by going 3-for-4 and batting in three runs. Junior Emma George and sophomore Alex Hernandez each went 3-for-5 and George included an RBI triple.

For St. Michael’s, senior Cia Alvarez came away with three hits, sophomore Rachel Morgan added two more, and 8th grader Lauryn Pecos also picked up a pair of hits.
