The Allisons of Santa Fe have been distance runners for quite some time, taking to the road while in elementary schools, and becoming among the top youngsters in the 5- and 10 kilometers.

Mom and dad paved the way for their four daughters and one son, and they all ran for Santa Fe High one time or another. Now, only Judith is left as a Demonette, and the senior is in quest of something she’s worked for in the last three years, and that’s a 5A state hurdles championship.

At the Rio Rancho Invitational Last Saturday, she ran her best time in the 300-meter hurdles, winning in the state’s fastest time, 45.71, in all groups, to become the current second hurdler in the state to break into the 45-second range. Her No. 1 challenger, sophomore Hannah Keiss of Rio Rancho Cleveland, finished in 45.91 at the Storm Relays last Friday.

Allison is better in the longer distance, but did enter the 100 hurdles at Rio Rancho and also came in first in 16:11 to win by 1.07 over Taos’ Abigail Gunter in the fourth-best time in 5A of the shorter obstacle.

She is expected to compete in the annual Marilyn Sepulveda Meet of Champions over the University of New Mexico track Monday. That’s by invitation only, and Judith has certainly made her way there with hard work and quality performances.

And she’s been successful making the switch from distance races to the hurdles, and now looks ahead to standing on the podium at the state championships.

As a sophomore she had the 3rd fastest time of 47.7 in the 300 races in two preliminary heats. In the final, she ran seventh in 47.39. Last year, she placed second behind Keiss in the 300 prelims in 46.13, and took third in the finals in 45.91.
