Catches of the week

Lead

Caballo Lake: Kayla Crawford of Alamogordo caught her first catfish, a 9-pound channel catfish Apr. 19. She was using cut bait. Milla Crawford, age 7, caught a 2-pound catfish Apr. 19. She was using cut bait.
Cochiti Lake: Mike Watkins of Albuquerque caught a 6.5-pound largemouth bass Apr. 19. He was fishing the east side of the lake and using a crank bait. Antonio Naranjo of Pena Blanca caught a 25-inch northern pike Apr. 20. He was using a soft bait.
Eagle Nest Lake: Annie Espinoza, age 18, of Questa caught a 21-inch rainbow trout Apr. 19. She was using PowerBait. Tommy Torres of Taos caught a 42-inch, 25-pound northern pike. He was using garlic PowerBait on a very small hook.
Green Meadow Lake: Terry Callaway of Hobbs caught a 5-pound largemouth bass Apr. 20. He was using a red lipless crank bait.
Greene Acres Lake: Layla Rodriquez, age 10, of Clovis caught a limit of trout within one-hour Apr. 20. She was using PowerBait.
Lake Roberts: Caleb Longwell, age 16, of Las Cruces caught a 17.25-inch largemouth bass Apr. 19. It was his biggest fish ever caught and he was using worms.
Rancho Grande Pond: Austyn and Diontaye Riley and dad, Dion of Laguna Pueblo caught limits of trout Apr. 17 and Diontaye, age 13, caught another limit Apr. 19. They were using Fire Balls and PowerBait.
Roswell Kids Pond: Austin Swann, age 7, and Landon Swann, age 6, caught their limits of catfish Apr. 15. They were using chicken liver.
Santa Rosa Lake: Tony Abbondanza caught a 25-inch, 9-pound channel catfish Apr. 20. He was using live worms.
Storrie Lake: Max Buell, age 8, of Artesia caught a 16.75-inch rainbow trout Apr. 20. He was using salmon peach PowerBait.
Sumner Lake: Maria Cardoza of Artesia caught two walleye measuring about 20 inches each Apr. 19. These were her first walleye ever and she was using a white and purple Rapala shad rap. Cutter Daubert, age 4, of Roswell caught his very first crappie Apr. 19. He was using a crank bait.
The following reports came in late, but are definitely worth mentioning:
Aztec Pond: Anita Ath of Aztec caught her biggest trout ever, a 22-inch rainbow Apr. 10. She was using a Panther Martin.
Corrales Drain: Burque Bass Man caught a 29-inch, 9-pound northern pike Apr. 13. He was using a ned rig with a Z-Man TRD Crawz.
Eagle Rock Lake: Sisters Sofia and Eve Mondragon, ages 6 and 4 respectively, along with their mom, Deandra Mondragon of Ojo Caliente caught limits of rainbow trout Apr. 14. They were using salmon eggs.

Northeast Fishing Report

Cabresto Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Charette Lakes: Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait for trout.
Cimarron River: Stream flow near Cimarron on Monday morning was 25.7 cfs. Fishing was good using Fire Balls, bead head hare’s ears, San Juan worms, small spinners and red zebra midges for trout.
Clayton Lake: Fishing from the bank was slow to fair using PowerBait for trout. Eric and Alan Christman from Clayton were in a small boat and caught limits of trout up to 18 inches. They were using Colorado spoons. Fishing was good using chicken liver for small catfish. We had no reports on other species.
Conchas Lake: Fishing was very good using grubs, minnows, worms, crank baits, spinner baits, jerk baits, jigs and creature baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was fair to good using minnows, worms and grubs for crappie. Walleye fishing picked up this past week with several caught by anglers using minnows, grubs and crank baits. We had no reports on other species. The surface water temp ranged from the high 50s to the low 60s.
Costilla Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Cowles Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Coyote Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Eagle Nest Lake: Fishing was very good using a variety of PowerBait for rainbow trout and a few northern pike. Anglers also picked up a few fish while using Pistol Petes and spinners. Veltran Trujillo and sons Mateo, age 4, and Adam, age 9, of Taos caught their limits of trout and a 38-inch northern pike April 20. They were using garlic PowerBait. Fishing for perch was slow with just a few caught by anglers using worms. We had no reports on other species.
Eagle Rock Lake: Fishing was very good using PowerBait and Fire Balls for trout.
Fawn Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Gallinas River: Fishing was good using worms, Fire Balls and bead head hare’s ears for trout.
Hopewell Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Lake Alice: Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait for trout.
Lake Maloya: Fishing was very good using assorted PowerBait for trout up to 18 inches.
Los Pinos River: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Maxwell Lake 13: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Monastery Lake: Fishing was good using PowerBait and bead head prince nymphs for trout.
Morphy Lake: Closed for a renovation project on the dam. Work is scheduled to be completed in June, but no firm opening date has been set.
Pecos River: Stream flow near the town of Pecos on Monday morning was 511 cfs. Fishing was fair using worms, spoons, prince nymphs and San Juan worms for trout.
Red River: Stream flow below the hatchery on Monday morning was 108 cfs. Fishing was good using copper John Barrs, leeches, PowerBait and worms for trout. Fishing at the hatchery pond was good using PowerBait.
Rio Grande: Stream flow at the Taos Junction Bridge was 881 cfs. Before the latest increase in flows, trout fishing above the John Dunn bridge area was fair using caddis nymphs, wooly buggers and bead head soft hackles for trout. We had no reports on other species.
Rio Hondo: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Rio Mora: Stream flow on Monday morning was 110 cfs. Fishing was good using worms for trout.
Rio Pueblo: Stream flow on Monday morning near Penasco was 110 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Santa Cruz Reservoir: Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait, Fisher Chick spinners, Kastmasters and Pistol Petes for trout.
Shuree Ponds: Closed for the season.
Springer Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Storrie Lake: Fishing was good using PowerBait and Fire Balls for trout. Stubblefield Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Ute Lake: HOT SPOT FOR CRAPPIE: Fishing was excellent using minnows, white and chartreuse curly tail grubs and small jigs for crappie in shallow water. Fishing was good using swim baits, jig and minnow combinations and worms for walleye. Fishing was good trolling crank baits for white bass. Fishing was good using swim baits, spinner baits and the general PowerBait for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was good using cut bait and chicken liver on trout lines for catfish. Anglers also did well using the same baits with rod and reel. The surface temp was in the mid to high 50s.

Northwest Fishing Report

Abiquiu Lake: Fishing from the bank this past week was good for anglers using worms and minnows. They caught a mixed bag of walleye, smallmouth bass and brown trout. Launching boats is still quite difficult and 4-wheel drive is required.
Animas River: Water flow below Aztec on Monday morning was 1,890 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Albuquerque Area Drains: Our only reports this week were of a few bullheads and catfish caught by anglers using worms.
Bluewater Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Brazos River: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Canjilon Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Chama River: Monday morning flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 1,190 cfs and 1,400 cfs respectively. Trout fishing was slow.
Cochiti Lake: Fishing was slow for all species with just a few northern pike and bass caught by anglers using crank baits, spinner baits and soft plastics.
El Vado Lake: Fishing was good using worms, small jigs, spinners, tubes, wet flies and crank baits for a mixed bag of perch, small smallmouth bass, brown trout and carp.
Fenton Lake: Fishing was good using Pistol Petes, bead head nymphs, Fire Balls and PowerBait for rainbow trout.
Heron Lake: Fishing was fair using PowerBait roe sacs and Fire Balls for rainbow trout. We had no reports on other species.
Jackson Lake: Fishing was fair using PowerBait, worms and spinners for trout.
Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez near the town of Jemez on Monday morning was 339 cfs and fishing was slow. Chris Wentz of Corrales reported a good day fishing on the East Fork. He caught and released several brown trout and one rainbow while using bead head prince nymphs and bead head hare’s ears. Trout fishing on the Cebolla was good for anglers using worms, San Juan worms and Fire Balls. We had no other stream reports.
Laguna del Campo: Closed for the season.
Lagunitas Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Lake Farmington: Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait, worms and spinners for trout.
Manzano Lake: Fishing was fair using PowerBait, worms and Fire Balls for trout. We had no reports on other species.
Navajo Lake: Fishing was fair using jerk baits, spinner baits, grubs, tubes, jigs and crank baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing for northern pike was rated as slow by most anglers, but a few were caught by anglers using swim baits and crank baits. Fishing for trout was fair for anglers using worms, PowerBait, spoons and crank baits.
San Gregorio Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
San Juan River: Stream flow on Monday morning was at 343 cfs and expected to increase to 400 cfs today. The water remains murky, but fishing was rated as fair for anglers using wooly buggers, red annelids, San Juan worms, bright egg patterns and worms.
Seven Springs Brood Pond: Fishing was good using PowerBait, salmon eggs and bead head nymphs for trout.
Tingley Beach: Trout fishing at the Youth and Central ponds was good using PowerBait, worms, Pistol Petes and spinners. A few largemouth bass were caught by anglers using worms and wooly buggers. We had no reports on other species.
Trout Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Southwest Fishing Report

Alumni Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Bear Canyon Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. Fishing was fair using liver and worms for catfish. We had no reports on other species.
Bill Evans Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits and spinners for bass and PowerBait for trout. We had no reports on other species.
Caballo Lake: HOT SPOT FOR CRAPPIE: Fishing was very good using curly tail grubs, minnows, jigs and crank baits for crappie and an occasional walleye. Aaron Stern reported that he and Junior and Norma Alfaro and Nathaniel Trillo, age 7, all of El Paso caught 17 crappie and Aaron’s first ever walleye April 20. They were using curly tail grubs. Fishing was fair to good using liver and cut bait for catfish. Fishing was fair using crank baits, creature baits and spinner baits for largemouth bass. We had no reports on other species.
Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing was very good using minnows, crank baits, grubs and jigs for a mixed bag of crappie, white bass and a few walleye. Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was fair to good for anglers using jerk baits, spinner baits, crank baits, senkos, tubes, jigs and swim baits. Fishing was good using liver, homemade dough bait, night crawlers and cut bait for catfish. The surface temp was in the low 60s. Escondida Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.
Gila River: Stream flow on Monday morning was 209 cfs. Fishing was fair using chicken liver for catfish. We had no other reports.
Glenwood Pond: Fishing was good using PowerBait and worms for trout.
Lake Roberts: Fishing was fair to good using worms, liver and homemade dough bait for catfish. Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait, worms, wooly buggers and Pistol Petes for trout. Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits, spinners and worms for largemouth bass. We had no reports on other species.
Percha Dam: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Quemado Lake: Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait for trout.
Rancho Grande Ponds: Fishing was very good using PowerBait and Fire Balls for trout.
Rio Grande: Stream flow below Elephant Butte Monday morning was 0.00 cfs. Fishing on the river above Elephant Butte was good using liver and cut bait for catfish.
Snow Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Young Pond: The pond remains closed for cleaning and repair.

Alto Lake: Fishing was fair using PowerBait for trout. Fishing was fair using spinners, worms, tubes and crank baits for largemouth bass. We had no reports on other species.
Bataan Lake: Fishing was fair to good using liver and worms for catfish. We had no reports on other species.
Berrendo Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Black River: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday morningwas 58.8 cfs. Fishing was good using chicken liver and homemade dough bait for catfish.
Blue Hole Park Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Bonito Lake: Closed until further notice by the city of Alamogordo due to fire damage. It appears now that the lake will be out of commission until the spring of 2020.
Bosque Redondo Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Bottomless Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Brantley Lake: Fishing was fair to good using worms and liver for catfish. Fishing was good using crank baits, spinner baits and jerk baits for white bass and largemouth bass.
Carlsbad Municipal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Chaparral Park Lake: Trout fishing was slow.
Corona Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.
El Rito Creek: Fishing was slow to fair using PowerBait and Fire Balls for trout.
Eunice Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Green Meadow Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. Fishing for all other species was slow, but there were a few largemouth bass caught by anglers using crank baits.
