Santa Fe Prep sophomore Sophia Gossum, junior Chelsea Griscom, and two victorious girl’s relay teams led the Griffins to second place in their annual swimming-diving meet held Saturday at the Genoveva Chavez Community Center pool.

As expected, Los Alamos took the girls title with 485 points, with Prep behind with 203 points, and Santa Fe High seventh with 155, and St. Michael’s placing 17th with five points.
Individually, Gossum picked up two state qualifying wins in the 50 and 100-yard freestyle, the shorter race in 25.27, and the 100 in 54.91. She also swam legs on the winning 200-yard freestyle and 200-yard medley relays, both turning in state qualifying times.
The freestyle relay led off with Griscom, who was followed by sophomore Yangchen Rotto, Gossum and junior Bess McAlpin, and they timed 1:49.18.
In the medley, it was McAlpin, Griscom, Gossum and Rotto, and they turned in a time of 2:00.87.
Griscom also finished second in the 100 breaststroke in 1:17.05, and third in the 200 individual medley in 2:28.43. In the 100 backstroke, McAlpin clocked 1:06.04 to place fourth.
Santa Fe High got a second place from senior Sophia Snyder in the 200 freestyle, and she was timed in 2:07,19. In the 100 backstroke, she placed third in 1:05.28, and her sophomore sister, Cecilla, came in fifth in 1:07.76, with McAlpin in between them.
The Demonettes also gained a second place from sophomore Samantha Spiers in the 200 IM, and she finished just ahead of Griscom.
Farmington’s Alli Talcott won both the 100 breaststroke and 200 freestyle in state qualifying time, the breast in 1:12.86 and the free in 2:05.31. Sophia Snyder was close to qualifying with her second place time of 2:07.19 in the freestyle.
Other victorious state qualifiers were Taos’ Grace Golfer with a 1:04.73 in the 100 butterfly, Albuquerque’s Hope Christian’s Reese Hinnerichs with a 5:12.90 in the grueling 500 free, Emma Kelley of Albuquerque Sandia Prep in the 200 individual medley in 2:18.10, and teammate Julia Quernemoen taking the 100 back in 1:03.80.
Los Alamos also qualified for state by coming in first in the 400 freestyle in 4:06.45, with Quernemoen on the lead leg. She also came in second to Gossum in the 50 free, and again had a state qualifying time.
The 1-meter dive winner was the Hilltoppers’ Emme Mooday, with Prep junior Reverly Rothchild seventh.

St. Michael’s Ethan Manske claimed first place Saturday in the 200-yard individual medley in the state qualifying time of 2:05.28, but settled for fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke in the annual Griffins Invitational at the Genoveva Chavez Community Center pool.
Manske, who is having a stellar campaign in his initial time on the Horsemen program, added the IM to his previous state qualifying races. In the breaststroke, he was timed in 1:10.27 in a race won by Los Alamos’ Andy Corliss in 1:03.12, which was a state qualifier.
Stadick had a pair of fourth places, one in the 100 butterfly in 58.38 that was near the qualifying time, and the other in the 50 freestyle in 24.87.
Fellow Demons freshman, Elias Gibson, took fourth and clocked a state qualifying time of 2:10.65 in the 200 individual medley, with victorious Manske paving the way for the three finishing behind him.
In the 1-meter dive, Santa Fe High senior Dante Hernandez came in four, with Farmington’s Mosiah Seavey the winner.
Albuquerque St. Pius X won the 200 freestyle relay in the state qualifying time of 1:36.00, and third leg, Thomas McCarthy, also qualified for state with his triumph in the 50 free in 23:22.
The Los Alamos quartet won with a state qualifying time of 3:23.57 in the 400 free relay, with anchor Henderson also qualifying for state by claiming the grueling 500 freestyle in 4:55.52, plus the 100 fly in 53.87.
In the boy’s team scoring, Los Alamos made it a sweep with an awesome 547 points, with the Demons taking seventh with 126, St. Michael’s eighth with 119, and Santa Fe Prep 11th with 90.
