Capital City Track and Field Invitational set to run Saturday at Santa Fe High in the third-straight week of competition in the City Different

At the Pecos Invitational Wednesday, Desert Academy’s 4 x 400 relay ran second to qualify for state in 3:37.98

For the third straight week, there’s track and field running in Santa Fe, not just practice, but actual competition close to home.

Following on the heels of the two-day Golden Spike Classic at Santa Fe High and Jaguar Invitational at Capital High, Saturday offers the annual Capital City Invitational at SFHS.

Among those expected to compete are host Santa Fe High, Capital, Santa Fe Prep, Santa Fe Indian School, St. Michael’s, Pojoaque Valley, Espanola Valley, Academy of Technology and The Classics, and Santa Fe Waldorf.

The meet is scheduled to start at 9 a.m., with SFHS head coach Peter Graham as the director.

Meanwhile, Desert Academy had its fill of competition with last Saturday’s meet at Fort Sumner, and Wednesday’s meet at Pecos.

At Pecos, Wildcats’ senior Jonas Kaare-Rasmussen ran his first 800 of the season and finished third in 2:12.84.

“He had missed nearly half of last season,” said Desert Academy coach June Dickinson, “because of a detached retina, and so this was a good performance, and I feel he is on the way to qualifying for state as he has done the last three years.”

Wildcats’ sophomore Anish Kumar did finish first in the 1,600 by running 4:58.15.

“This was a major achievement for Anish,” Dickinson said. “He finally broke the 5-minute mark and took eight seconds off his time at the Fort Sumner meet. Looking towards 4:50 to qualify for state, he has the determination and talent to accomplish this, but there are fewer opportunities now to improve on his time.”

Dickinson is referring to the season now being in its stretch run.

In the 4 x 400 relay, Desert Academy was the runner-up in 3:37.98 to qualify for state. It ran with a quartet of seniors Noa Noa Legat Hudson, Alex Kellam and Max Logan, and sophomore Jakob Kaare-Rasmussen.

At Fort Sumner, Kumar won the 1,600 in 5:05.74, Jakob Kaare-Rasmussen the 400 in 1:38.44, Kellam the 800 in 2:09.94, and Logan the 200 in 23:84, where Hudson placed sixth in 25:04.

Also victorious was the 4 x 200 relay foursome that clocked 1:38.44 with senior John Rigatti, Jakob Kaare-Rasmussen, Hudson and Logan. In the 100 meters, Logan sped to second place in 11.74 and third was Hudson in 12:04.

The lone girl’s winner was senior Lia Kane running 5:59.84 and topping the field in the 1,600. A second place in the 4 x 100 relay went to the quartet of sophomore twins, Molly and Jessica LeBron, Bea Lowe and senior Rebecca Soifer racing 56:44.

Jessica LeBron also took third in the 100 meters in 14:64, Lowe ran 52:94 for third in the 300 hurdles, and it was third place in the 100 hurdles for freshman Michaela Glinsky in the time of 20:04. Fifth in the 400 was Molly LeBron in 1:06.34.

“Fort Sumner runs a great meet,” Dickinson said, “and it was a day of 82 degrees and somewhat windy.”
