The defending state champion Pecos boys demonstrated just how tough it will be to dethrone them when they dominated the District 3-3A championships they hosted Saturday.

They won 10 of the 19 events, scored in each event, and ran up 198 points to leave the other four schools in the rear. Second was Academy of Technology and The Classics with 101, Desert Academy followed with 85, and Raton scored 26.

And the Panther girls also reigned supreme. They put together 142 points, ATC was second with 128.50, Raton next with 92, and Desert Academy  totaled 59.50.

The hosts won six events and scored in 13.

It was the last chance to qualify for the Friday-Saturday state championships at the University of New Mexico, and all four schools were able to qualify a number of athletes.

Wildcats’ senior Max Logan won the 200 (23:07), the 400 (52:45) and the discus (107-11). In the 800, senior teammate Jonas Kaare-Rasmussen finished ahead of four Panthers to win in 2:06.92. Second was Pecos junior Josh DeHerrera in 2:12.02.

DeHerrera came back to win the 300 hurdles in 45:74, senior Isaiah Valdez took the 100 meters in 19:41, freshman Isaiah Armijo the 1,600 in 4:59.03, junior Michael Montano the 3,200 in 11:02.09, and sophomore Omar Dominguez the 110 hurdles in 18:91.

That’s the Panthers in the running events.

In the field events, they had sophomore Issac Gonzales claim the pole vault at a height of 8-06. junior Carlos Cordova the high jump at 5-6, and junior Mario Archuelta the  javelin with a throw of 133-07.

They also took first in the 1,600 sprint medley relay, with sophomore Sebastian Gomez, freshman Anthony Armijo, senior Isaac Cde Baca, and sophomore Angel Varela timed in 4:02.20. Ditto the 4 x 400 in 3:44.02 with Cde Baca, senior Julian Garcia, Cordova and Gomez.

The 4 x 100 relay went to ATC in 46:72, and it ran with sophomore Ahbedoh White Eagle, senior Sean Delica, sophomore Gabe Lopez and sophomore Chase Sullivan. The Phoenix added the 4 x 200, timed in 1:40.71 behind Delica, Lopez, White Eagle and sophomore John McCombs.

Desert Academy senior Rise Miller topped the field in the shot put with a best of 37-07. His teammate, senior John Rigatti, took the triple jump by going 37-10.50.

The Pecos girls dominated the 800, with 8th grader Alexis (Lexi) Gonzales winning in 2:49.09, 8th grader Destiny Trujillo second in 2:51.67, and third to 8th grader Eliza Ortiz in 2:52.71.

In the 400, that went to the Panthers’ 8th grader Kianna Quintana in 1:06.99. Then there was sophomore Faith Flores victorious in the high jump by soaring 4-06, and sophomore Mikayla Gonzales the javelin at 84-06, while junior Reyna Perez was a winner twice, taking the discus (85-06) and the shot put (28-10).

ATC junior Lilia Noger-Onstott won both the triple jump (31-08) and the long jump (14-8). Her teammate, freshman Keilah Purcell, took the pole vault at 6-6, Phoenix 8th grader Kate Ferguson the 300 hurdles( 56.92) and the 3,200 (13:31.75). In the hurdles, she was the only one to dip under one minute.

Desert Academy senior Lia Kane is no doubt a candidate for state honors in the 1,600, and she won this time in 6:06.23. In the 100 hurdles, first place went to Wildcats’ freshman Michaela Glinsky in 19:02.

Desert also took the top spot in the 4 x 400, clocking 4:36.99 with the foursome of sophomore Jessica LeBron, junior Natalie Lomgmire-Kulis, sophomore Molly LeBron and senior Savannah Scarborough.

The 1,600 sprint medley went to ATC in 2:56.02 with 8th grader Maggie Rittmeyer, freshman Justine Salazar, 8th grader Naomi Lujan and freshman Valerie Cera.
