Gov. issues statement on criminal justice reform including

By Office of the Governor
Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham issued the following statement Wednesday:
“I am firmly committed to being tough, smart and safe as we work to secure our communities and build a foundation from which New Mexicans can lead fulfilling lives. Today I signed into law several smart criminal justice reform initiatives that will help prioritize our public safety resources and allow rehabilitated New Mexicans the opportunity to reintegrate into our shared community.
“Senate Bill 96, a bipartisan piece of legislation that would remove the so-called criminal history “box” from job applications, allows New Mexicans a fair opportunity at employment. It is our responsibility to ensure that we create a pathway for individuals to contribute to our economy and to our communities.
“By the same token, House Bill 370 encourages New Mexicans who have committed to personal rehabilitation the freedom and opportunity to productively rebuild their lives. It provides an incentive for these individuals to avoid future interactions with the criminal justice system and remain law-abiding citizens. We will never, ever weaken our resolve to be tough on the worst offenders. But we will responsibly take steps to assist our friends and neighbors who deserve a second chance to contribute to our society.”
