TIME FOR THE GOVERNOR TO PROTECT STUDENTS BY STEPPING UP TO SIGN THE BUDGET!

PRESS RELEASE – LEGISLATIVE WRAP

By Charles Goodmacher, Government & Media Relations | March 18, 2017

“Teachers and education employees continue to work hard to insure all students succeed, giving of themselves on meager pay in worsening working conditions. It is time for the Governor to step up and to sign the budget and minimal revenue bills sent her by the legislature. Anything less means further cuts to education, reducing opportunities for student success,” says Betty Patterson, President of NEA-NM.

“Educators, parents and students called, wrote thousands of letters, walked, rallied, petitioned and even used social media to advocate for students and our public schools. If the Governor vetoes the budget, she will be leaving us all behind after sixty days of hope and civic participation,” adds Charles Bowyer, NEA-NM Executive Director.

“We thank all the legislators who worked so hard to try to make our teacher’s jobs livable, and to increase opportunities for student success,” adds Patterson.

“Educators throughout the state were uplifted by our legislative Champions and also by the thousands of parents and community members who joined with educators statewide to raise their voice against the policies of this administration and legislators who continue to harm our public school system in New Mexico,” says Charles Goodmacher, NEA-NM Government and Media Relations Director for NEA-NM. “The best news coming out of this session is just that: citizens are standing and organizing to support our educators and students,” he adds.

Next week, NEA-NM will be posting a full breakdown of how education bills did in the session. Please see our “@NEAM1886” Facebook page, and “NEANewMexico” on Twitter as well as our www.nea-nm.org website for further analysis.
