Senator Tom Udall Releases Statement Ahead of Vote by U.S House of Representatives

The U.S. House of Representatives will vote soon on #Trumpcare and the future of our health care system in New Mexico and across the country. The Trumpcare bill they are voting on will cancel health care for 14 million people by next year alone, including 263,000 New Mexicans who get care because of the Medicaid expansion.

It’s pretty simple: Trumpcare will be a disaster for New Mexico. It cuts $880 billion from Medicaid, and puts the state of New Mexico on the hook for $11 billion we already don’t have in the budget, straining rural hospitals and health care clinics to the brink all across the state. It means regular people will lose access to basic doctor visits, as well as cancer screenings, heart tests, diabetes tests, prescription drugs, and many other forms of health care. It would also decimate our economy: Federal Medicaid spending supports an estimated 50,000 jobs in our state, and these reductions place New Mexico’s fastest growing job industry in danger. If Trumpcare passes, it could throw our state back into recession.

Thousands of New Mexicans have contacted me urging me to fight Trumpcare, and I will oppose this disastrous bill if it makes it’s way to the Senate. As early as today, it faces a crucial test in the House. Please do your part to #SaveACA and #KeepNMCovered; call your Representative in the House and tell them to vote no on the American Health Care Act.
