Colima Dogs and Aztec Goddesses: Frida and Diego Collect Ancient Mexican Art

Khristaan Villela, Director, Museum of International Folk Art, will give an illustrated talk titled “Colima Dogs and Aztec Goddesses: Frida and Diego Collect Ancient Mexican Art”.

Diego Rivera was one of the first collectors in the field of pre-Columbian art starting with his first trip to the Yucatan and Tehuantepec in 1921.  Frida Kahlo shared his passion depicting Mexican antiquities in her paintings as part of their campaign to establish pride in all that was indigenous to their country. Their collection eventually numbered 1000s of pieces.  From the 1940s they devoted their resources to the construction of the Anahucalli Museum that Diego designed to house the collection.
