New Mexico Fishing and Stock Report

Catches of the week:

  • Abiquiu Lake: Steve Henke of Bernalillo caught a 29.5-inch walleye Aug. 8. He was using a homemade spinner.
  • Bluewater Lake: Diego Otero, 8, of Tome, caught and released his first tiger muskie Aug. 8. He was using hotdogs. Rudy Contreras caught a 35-inch tiger muskie Aug. 13. He was using a lure.
  • Clayton Lake: Aaron Earle of Clayton caught an 8.5-pound channel catfish Aug. 12. He was using chicken liver.
  • Elephant Butte Lake: Randall Bell of Elephant Butte caught and released a 4.10-pound smallmouth bass Aug. 12. He was using a senko.
  • Lake Roberts: Vance Lee of Virden caught a 5.8-pound largemouth bass Aug. 9. He was using a Model A Bomber.
  • Trout Lakes: Cousins Graeme Martinez, 8, and Shane Moquino, 8, both of San Ildefonso Pueblo, joined forces to land a 17-inch rainbow trout Aug. 8. They were using green PowerBait.

The following reports came in late but deserve a mention:

  • Elephant Butte Lake: Dennis Carmen of El Paso, Texas caught a 24-inch walleye July 31 and coach August Smith caught a 27-inch walleye Aug. 1. They were trolling white and silver Rapalas at 10 to 15 feet.
  • Morphy Lake: Angelo Ortiz, 4, of El Pueblo, caught a 17-inch rainbow trout Aug. 7. He was using a worm under a bobber on his mini Spider Man rod.

Aug. 15

Northeast

Charette Lakes: Trout fishing was slow.

Clayton Lake: Fishing was fair to good using chicken liver and worms for catfish. Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait, salmon eggs and worms for trout. We had no other reports. Due to low water conditions, the boat ramp remains closed.

Cimarron River: Stream flow near Cimarron on Monday was 13.8 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week. Fishing at the Gravel Pit Lakes was good using salmon eggs, PowerBait and Pistol Petes.

Conchas Lake: Fishing was fair to good using tubes, Pop Rs, jerk baits, crank baits and senkos for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Night fishing was good using shrimp, cut bait and liver for catfish. Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits, minnows and jig and night crawler rigs for walleye. We had no other reports.

Costilla Creek: Stream flow on Monday below Costilla Dam was 65.7 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Cowles Ponds: Fishing was good using PowerBait, worms and salmon eggs for trout.

Coyote Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eagle Rock Lake: Fishing was good using PowerBait, Fire Balls, Silver Label Fire Bait, worms, Pistol Petes, Rooster Tails and Super Dupers for trout.

Eagle Nest Lake: Trout fishing was slow to fair using PowerBait, worms, Panther Martins and Platte River specials. Fishing was very good using worms for perch. We had no reports on other species.

Gallinas River: Fishing was good using worms, salmon eggs, prince nymphs and egg patterns for trout.

Hopewell Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Alice: Trout fishing was slow. Fishing pressure was extremely light.

Lake Maloya: Fishing was good using Pistol Petes, parachute Adams, elk hair caddis, PowerBait and Fire Balls for trout. Fishing was good using worms for perch.

Los Pinos River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Maxwell Lake 13: Fishing was slow for all species.

Monastery Lake: Fishing was good using small Kastmasters, Pistol Petes, worms and PowerBait for trout.

Morphy Lake: Trout fishing was slow to fair using worms and PowerBait for trout.

Pecos River: Streamflow near Pecos on Monday was 79.9 cfs. Fishing was good using Fire Balls, PowerBait, worms, San Juan worms, stone flies, prince nymphs and Panther Martins for trout. Tyler Stidham reported a good stone fly hatch above Terrero this past weekend.

Red River: Stream flow below the hatchery on Monday was 85 cfs. Fishing was very good using salmon eggs, worms, stone flies, midge imitations for trout. Red River City Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Grande: Stream flow on Monday at the Taos Junction Bridge was 411 cfs. Fishing was good using elk hair caddis, bead-head wooly buggers, poundmeisters, copper John Barrs, Panther Martin spinners, Mepps spinners and night crawlers. Fishing was fair using streamers, spoons and spinners for smallmouth bass. We had no other reports.

Rio Hondo: Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 34.2 cfs. Fishing was good using parachute Adams, salmon eggs and worms for trout.

Rio Mora: As of Monday, stream flow near Terrero was 22.6 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using worms and salmon eggs for trout.

Rio Pueblo: Stream flow near Penasco on Monday was 26.6 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Cruz Reservoir: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Shuree Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Springer Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Storrie Lake: Fishing was fair using PowerBait, worms and Fire Balls for trout. We had no other reports.

Stubblefield Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Ute Lake: Fishing was very good using liver, cut bait and prepared baits for catfish. Fishing was fair to good using jigging spoons for white bass. We had no other reports. The surface water temp was in the high 70s.

Winsor Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake: Fishing was fair to good using crank baits, tubes, salt craws, curly tail grubs, crawdad imitation flies and night crawlers for smallmouth bass. Fishing for walleye was very good using spinner and night crawler combinations, crank baits and spinners. We had no other reports.

Animas River: Water flow near Aztec on Monday morning was 540 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Albuquerque Area Drains:  We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bluewater Lake: Fishing for tiger muskies was slow with just a few caught by anglers using hot dogs, swim baits and Rapala X-Raps. We had no other reports.

Brazos River: Fishing was good using copper John Barrs, elk hair caddis, Fire Balls and worms for trout.

Canjilon Lakes: Closed by the U.S. Forest Service until further notice.

Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 153 cfs and 227 cfs respectively. Fishing above and below El Vado was good using small midge patterns, wooly buggers, terrestrials, night crawlers, Fire Balls and PowerBait for brown and rainbow trout. We had no reports from below Abiquiu. NEW SPECIAL TROUT WATER: The river from the USGS gauging station to the confluence of the Rio Nutrias is now catch and release only using single barbless hook artificial flies and lures.

Cochiti Lake: Fishing was good using corn dry flies for carp. Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits, tubes, top water lures and jerk baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was fair using shrimp, chicken liver and homemade dough bait for catfish. We had no other reports.

El Vado Lake: Fishing was good using Mepps spinners, crank baits, tubes, grubs and worms for smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair using spinners, worms, PowerBait and terrestrials for brown and rainbow trout.

Fenton Lake: Fishing was slow.

Heron Lake: Bank fishing was good using garlic PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. The best reports came from anglers fishing the early morning hours. We had no reports from boaters.

Jackson Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez River near Jemez Springs on Monday morning was 19.8 cfs. Trout fishing on the Jemez was slow. Fishing on the upper Cebolla was fair using small dry flies, copper John Barrs and Fire Balls for trout. We had no other reports.

Laguna del Campo: Fishing was fair to good using Pistol Petes under a bubble, worms and PowerBait for trout.

Lagunitas Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Farmington: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Manzano Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using PowerBait for trout. We had no other reports. Fishing pressure was light.

Navajo Lake: Fishing was good using finesse worms, tubes, curly tail grubs, crawdad flies, crank baits and chatter baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass up to 4.5 pounds. Fishing was good using swim baits, chatter baits and crank baits for northern pike. Fishing for kokanee salmon was slow.  A few rainbow trout were caught by anglers using Panther Martin spinners and PowerBait. We had no other reports.

San Gregorio Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

San Juan River: Stream flow from Navajo Reservoir on Monday was 479 cfs. Trout fishing through the Quality Waters was good using dead chickens, RS2s, crystal flash emergers, chocolate foam wing emergers, little princesses, small bead-head pheasant tail nymphs, parachute Adams and San Juan worms. Through the bait waters, trout fishing was good using San Juan worms, copper John Barrs, salmon eggs, PowerBait, Fire Balls, Panther Martin spinners and Yozuri pins minnows.

Seven Springs Brood Pond: Fishing was good using PowerBait, salmon eggs, Zeke’s trout bait, worms and Pistol Petes for trout.

Tingley Beach: Fishing for catfish was slow again this past week with just a few caught by anglers using homemade baits and shrimp. We had no other reports.

Trout Lakes: Fishing was slow to fair using spinners, PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout.

Southwest

Alumni Pond: Fishing was slow to fair using worms and liver for catfish. We had no other reports.

Bear Canyon Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bill Evans Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Caballo Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using spoons, sassy shad, curly tail grubs and spinners for white bass. Fishing was good using cut bait, night crawlers and chicken liver for catfish. We had no other reports.

Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits, Pop Rs, tubes, senkos and creature baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing for crappie was slow with just a few caught by anglers using minnows and small leech patterns. Night fishing was good using cut bait, minnows, shrimp and chicken liver over baited holes for catfish. We had no other reports. The surface water temp was in the high 70s.

Escondida Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Gila River: Stream flow on Monday morning was 350 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Glenwood Pond: Fishing was good using PowerBait and Fire Balls for trout.

Lake Roberts: Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits, creature baits, tubes and finesse worms for largemouth bass. Fishing for catfish was fair using shrimp and chicken liver. We had no other reports.

Percha Dam: Fishing was fair to good using minnows and curly tail grubs for white bass. Fishing was fair to good using chicken liver, shrimp and cut bait. We had no other reports.

Quemado Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Rancho Grande Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Grande: Stream flow below Elephant Butte Monday morning was 2,140 cfs. Fishing below Elephant Butte and Caballo and at the Mesilla Valley Dam was fair using night crawlers, chicken liver and cut bait for catfish. Most of the reports this week were of small catfish. Fishing was fair using grubs, spoons and minnows for white bass. We had no other reports.

Snow Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Young Pond: Fishing was slow for all species

Southeast

Alto Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Bataan Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Black River: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 22.2 cfs. Fishing was slow with just a few catfish caught by anglers using beef liver and shrimp.

Blue Hole Park Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bonito Lake: Closed until further notice by the city of Alamogordo due to fire damage.

Bosque Redondo Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using chicken liver and shrimp for catfish. We had no other reports.

Bottomless Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Brantley Lake: Anglers are required to catch and release all fish here as high levels of pesticides have been found in some fish. Fishing was fair to good using top water lures, crank baits, tubes, 4 and 6-inch plastic worms, senkos and jigs for largemouth bass and white bass. We had no other reports.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Chaparral Park Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using liver for catfish. We had no other reports.

El Rito Creek: Fishing was fair using olive Pistol Petes, worms and PowerBait for trout. We had no other reports.

Eunice Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Green Meadow Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Greene Acres Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using chicken liver, hot dogs and homemade dough bait for catfish. We had no other reports.

Grindstone Reservoir: Fishing was fair using Pistol Petes, PowerBait and Fire Balls for trout. We had no other reports.

Jal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Van: Fishing was slow to fair using shrimp, Charlie’s catfish bait and chicken liver for catfish. The best reports came from anglers fishing early in the day. We had no other reports.

Oasis Park Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

Pecos River: Stream flow below Sumner Lake on Monday was 78.9 cfs. Fishing was slow for all species.

Perch Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using liver and homemade dough bait for catfish. We had no other reports.

Ruidoso River: Stream flow at Hollywood on Monday was 11.6 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Rosa Lake: Fishing was fair using crank baits, creature baits, senkos, finesse worms, curly tail grubs, top water lures and tubes for largemouth bass. Fishing was fair to good using spinner/night crawler rigs at about 15 feet and crank baits for walleye. Fishing was slow to fair using chicken liver and shrimp on trotlines for catfish. We had no other reports.

Sumner Lake: Fishing was fair using chicken liver, bluegill and shrimp for catfish. Fishing was slow to fair using bottom bouncer rigs tipped with minnows and night crawlers for walleye. A few were also caught by anglers using crank baits. Fishing for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass was reported as slow. A few were caught by anglers using senkos, jerk baits, chatter baits and crank baits.
