Having played five sports her senior year at St. Michael’s, Jocelyn Fernandez won’t have as much to do at Weatherford Junior College in Weatherford, Tex., just west of Fort Worth.

With her dad at the wheel alongside his girl friend, they started out Monday morning for the 11-hour ride where Jocelyn will be playing basketball. The school does not have a track and field program, and she won’t be playing soccer, softball or football.

“She was a little nervous,” said her dad, Joey Fernandez, who coached her in track and field and football, “because she hadn’t been away from home very often. It’s something she will have to get used to, but no more five sports for her, and she chose this school to play basketball.”

After two years at Weatherford, she intends to continue her schooling and lining up a career in athletic training.

As a five-sport Lady Horsemen athlete, Jocelyn played on the football team for the first time, scored a touchdown and kicked 9 of 11 extra points that included seven in a row. In soccer, she played most of the season with a broken thumb as a midfielder. In track and field, she ran with the sprint relay teams and was twice state champion in the javelin.

As for softball, it was played in the spring, as was track and field, so she devoted her time between the two by checking the schedules. She played mostly in the outfield.

But basketball is a her favorite sport and she played four seasons under head coach Martin Romero, scoring a career-high and breaking the school record for girls when she tossed in 46 points her junior year.

Joey and his girl friend didn’t get back to Santa Fe until late Wednesday night. He said it’s a bittersweet thing having someone you lived with for 18 years going away to start a new chapter.

“She gave me a long hug,” he said, “before we left.”
