New Mexico Fishing and Stock Report

Catches of the week

  • Clayton Lake: Aaron Earle of Clayton caught a 12.2-pound channel catfish Sept. 16. He was using chicken liver.
  • Navajo Lake: Clayton Herrera of Aztec caught and released a 5.07-pound largemouth bass and a 4.40-pound smallmouth bass Sept. 16. He was using a jig.
  • Rio Grande River: Jacob Lucero, 9, of Rio Rancho, caught a 20-inch, 5-pound channel catfish Sept. 9. He was using chicken liver. Ruben Lopez of Las Cruces caught a 31-inch, 9-pound catfish Sept. 15. He was fishing the river in the T or C area and using live shiners.
  • Seven Springs Brood Pond: Reyes Campos, 2 1/2, of El Rancho, caught and released his limit of trout Sept. 14. He was using a grasshopper imitation.
  • Sumner Lake: Johnny Thomas of Fort Sumner caught a 12-pound catfish Sept. 16. He was using night crawlers.
  • Tingley Beach: Siblings Cutter Sims, 5, Caylee Sims, 8 and Cooper Sims, 9, of Albuquerque, caught 23.75-inch, 19.75-inch and 20.5-inch channel catfish Sept. 17. They were all using stink bait.
The following reports came in late but deserve a mention:
  • Chama River: Charlie Guinn of Albuquerque caught a 21.5-inch brown trout Sept. 9. He was fishing below El Vado Lake and using a Rapala.
  • Navajo Lake: Cayden McQuitty, 8, of Farmington, caught a 40.5-inch, 22-pound, northern pike Sept. 2. He was using an orange Storm lure.

Sept. 19  

Northeast

Charette Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Clayton Lake: Fishing fair using PowerBait and Fire Balls for trout. Fishing was fair using chicken liver and worms for catfish. Fishing for all other species was slow.
Cimarron River: Stream flow near Cimarron on Monday was 33 cfs. Trout fishing at the Gravel Pit Lakes was good using salmon eggs and PowerBait. Fishing on the river was fair using worms and wooly buggers.
Conchas Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using tubes, jigs, craws, senkos, crank baits, chatter baits and jerk baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing for white bass was slow with just a few caught by anglers using crank baits, minnows and spoons. Fishing was good using shrimp, worms, cut bait and liver for catfish. We had no other reports.
Costilla Creek: Stream flow on Monday below Costilla Dam was 74.1 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Cowles Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Coyote Creek: Fishing was good using worms, salmon eggs and small bead-head nymphs for trout.
Eagle Rock Lake: Fishing was good using PowerBait, worms, salmon eggs, wooly buggers and spinners for trout.
Eagle Nest Lake: Fishing for trout was good trolling spinners on light weight tackle and using PowerBait from the shore and from anchored boats. Fishing was good using worms for perch. We had no other reports.
Gallinas River: Fishing was good using prince nymphs, copper John Barrs, worms and Fire Balls for trout.
Hopewell Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Lake Alice: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Lake Maloya: Trout fishing was fair to good using PowerBait. A few were also caught by anglers using wooly buggers, peacock nymphs and caddis imitations. The best reports came from anglers fishing the evening hours. Fishing was good using worms for perch.
Los Pinos River: Fishing was fair using BWOs, Adams, moth patterns, worms and salmon eggs for a mixed bag of brown and rainbow trout.
Maxwell Lake 13: Fishing was slow for all species.
Monastery Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Morphy Lake: Trout fishing was slow.
Pecos River: Streamflow near Pecos on Monday was 41.6 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using San Juan worms, bead head prince nymphs, wooly worms, salmon eggs and spinners for trout. The fall fishing season inside the National Historical Park runs through Nov. 6.
Red River: Stream flow below the hatchery on Monday was 59.5 cfs. Fishing was very good using salmon eggs, PowerBait, wooly buggers, poundmeisters, copper John Barrs and spinners for trout.
Red River City Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Rio Grande: Stream flow on Monday at the Taos Junction Bridge was 262 cfs. Fishing was very good using poundmeisters, wooly buggers, WD40s, foam wing emergers, BWOs, elk hair caddis, PowerBait and night crawlers for browns, cutbows and rainbow trout. A few smallmouth bass were caught by anglers using streamers and spinners. Fishing was fair using chicken liver, shrimp and night crawlers for catfish. We had no other reports.
Rio Hondo: Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 18.2 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using elk hair caddis, copper John Barrs, salmon eggs and worms for trout.
Rio Mora: As of Monday, stream flow near Terrero was 11 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Rio Pueblo: Stream flow near Penasco on Monday was 12.2 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Santa Cruz Reservoir: Fishing was slow with just a few trout caught by anglers using PowerBait.
Shuree Ponds: Fishing was good using Pistol Petes and wooly buggers for trout.
Springer Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using worms for perch and worms and cut bait for catfish. We had no other reports.
Storrie Lake: Fishing was slow with just a few catfish caught by anglers using chicken liver.
Stubblefield Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Ute Lake: Fishing was good using stink bait, cut bait and night crawlers for catfish. Fishing was good using worms for bluegill. Fishing was fair using crank baits and jig and grub combinations for walleye. Fishing for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass was slow with just a few caught by anglers using top water in the early morning hours and senkos and salt craws during the day. Fishing for white bass was slow. The surface water temp was in the mid 70s.
Winsor Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake: Fishing was good using tubes, grubs, worms, square bill crank baits and top water lures for smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair using tubes, curly tail grubs tipped with night crawlers, bottom bouncer rigs and worm harnesses at 12 to 25 feet for walleye. Bank fishing in the morning hours was good using worms for bluegill. We had no other reports.
Animas River: Water flow below Aztec on Monday morning was 171 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Albuquerque Area Drains:  Fishing was fair to good using worms for bluegill and catfish. We received good reports again this week from both the Belen Drain and the Albuquerque Drain. Anglers also reported catching largemouth bass in the Albuquerque Drain and Corrales Drain. They were using small tubes and worms.
Bluewater Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.
Brazos River: Fishing was fair to good using copper John Barrs, small prince nymphs, small dry flies and worms for trout.
Canjilon Lakes: Closed by the U.S. Forest Service until further notice.
Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 706 cfs and 802 cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was very good using bead-head wooly buggers, spinners, night crawlers, Fire Balls and PowerBait for brown and rainbow trout. Fishing below Abiquiu was slow. New Special Trout Water: The river from the USGS gauging station to the confluence of the Rio Nutrias is now catch and release only using single barbless hook artificial flies and lures.
Cochiti Lake: Fishing was fair to good using crank baits, spinner baits, tubes, senkos and jerk baits for smallmouth bass and an occasional largemouth bass and white bass. Matthew Castillo of Rio Rancho reported good smallmouth bass fishing last week. He was working the rock across from the main boat ramp and caught and released six smallmouth bass. He was using a shallow diving Storm crank bait. Fishing was fair using shrimp, chicken liver and homemade dough bait for catfish. We had no other reports.
El Vado Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using crank baits, jigs and tubes for smallmouth bass. We had no other reports.
Fenton Lake: Trout fishing picked up toward the end of last week and anglers did well over the weekend using garlic PowerBait, spinners and Pistol Petes.
Heron Lake: Bank fishing was fair using salmon eggs, worms and PowerBait for rainbow trout. We had no other reports. Fishing pressure was very light.
Jackson Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez River near Jemez Springs on Monday morning was 13.9 cfs. Trout fishing on the Jemez was fair for anglers using copper John Barrs and salmon eggs. Fishing on the Cebolla was very good using worms, Fire Balls and elk hair caddis. We had no other reports.
Laguna Del Campo: Fishing was good using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout.
Lagunitas Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Lake Farmington: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Manzano Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.
Navajo Lake: Fishing was good using top water lures, crank baits, jerk baits, chatter baits, tubes, creature bait and senkos for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was good using top water lures, jerk baits and crank baits for northern pike. Fishing was very good using worms and grubs for perch. Fishing for kokanee salmon was slow. We had no other reports. The surface water temp ranged from the high 60s to the low 70s.
San Gregorio Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
San Juan River: Stream flow on Monday morning was 792 cfs and was scheduled to be reduced to 650 cfs on September 19. Fly fishing action through the Quality waters was good for anglers using RS2s, root beers, small emergers, red annelids, San Juan worms, dead chickens, Adams and small bead-head pheasant tail nymphs. Trout fishing through the bait waters was good using night crawlers, PowerBait, San Juan worms and jerk baits.
Seven Springs Brood Pond: Fishing was very good using PowerBait, salmon eggs, Fire Balls, worms and Pistol Petes for trout.
Tingley Beach: Fishing was very good using hot dogs, stink bait, chicken liver, beef liver and shrimp for channel catfish. We had no other reports.
Trout Lakes: Fishing was very slow.

Southwest

Alumni Pond: Fishing was slow with just a few catfish caught by anglers using hot dogs and night crawlers. We had no other reports.
Bear Canyon Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Bill Evans Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Caballo Lake: Fishing was fair using crank baits, minnows and spoons for white bass. Fishing was fair using cut bait, liver and night crawlers for catfish. We had no other reports.
Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing was fair using night crawlers, chicken liver and cut bait for catfish. Fishing was slow to fair using senkos, six-inch worms, craws, jerk baits, top water lures and crank baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair using crank baits, minnows, spoons and curly tail grubs for white bass. We had no other reports.
Escondida Lake: Fishing was fair using hot dogs, chicken liver, homemade dough bait and cut bait for catfish. We had no other reports.
Gila River: Stream flow on Monday morning was 37.2 cfs.
Glenwood Pond: Fishing was good using PowerBait and Fire Balls for trout.
Lake Roberts: Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait for trout. We had no other reports.
Percha Dam: Fishing was slow to fair using minnows and night crawlers for a mixed bag of catfish and walleye.
Quemado Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Rancho Grande Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Rio Grande: Stream flow below Elephant Butte Monday morning was 1,270 cfs. Fishing below Elephant Butte and Caballo was fair to good using night crawlers, shrimp, minnows, beef liver, chicken liver and cut bait for catfish. Fishing was slow to fair using curly tail grubs, spoons and minnows for white bass. A few smallmouth bass were caught by anglers using minnows and night crawlers. We had no other reports.
Snow Lake: Fishing was good using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout.
Young Pond: Fishing was slow for all species.

Southeast

Alto Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using stink bait, night crawlers and beef liver for catfish. Fishing was fair using PowerBait for trout. We had no other reports.
Bataan Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.
Black River: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 56.2 cfs. We had no reports from anglers.
Blue Hole Park Pond: Fishing was slow with just a few catfish caught by anglers using worms.
Bonito Lake: Closed until further notice by the city of Alamogordo due to fire damage.
Bosque Redondo Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Bottomless Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Brantley Lake: Anglers are required to catch and release all fish here as high levels of pesticides have been found in some fish. Fishing was fair to good using top water lures, crank baits, curly tail grubs, flukes, tubes, senkos and craws for largemouth bass and white bass. Fishing was fair to good using liver, cut bait and night crawlers for catfish. We had no other reports.
Carlsbad Municipal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Chaparral Park Lake: Fishing was fair using worms and hot dogs for catfish.
El Rito Creek: Fishing was fair using night crawlers for catfish. A few trout were caught by anglers using PowerBait. We had no other reports.
Eunice Lake: Fishing was fair using night crawlers and stink bait for catfish.
Green Meadow Lake: Fishing was fair using shrimp, worms and liver for catfish. Our only other catch report was from Sam Armstrong. He was fishing at night for catfish and using shrimp and liver and caught a big largemouth bass.
Greene Acres Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Grindstone Reservoir: Fishing was fair to good using wooly buggers, weighted nymphs, worms, PowerBait and spinners for smallmouth bass, rainbow trout and perch.
Jal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Lake Van: Fishing was slow for all species.
Oasis Park Lake: Fishing was fair to good using worms, hot dogs and homemade dough bait for catfish.
Pecos River: Stream flow below Sumner Lake on Monday was 93.1 cfs. Fishing was fair using chicken liver, night crawlers and cut bait for catfish. We had no other reports.
Perch Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Ruidoso River: Stream flow at Hollywood was 12.9 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Santa Rosa Lake: Fishing was fair using crank baits, tubes, worms and jerk baits for smallmouth bass. Fishing was slow to fair using chicken liver and night crawlers for catfish. We had no other reports.
 Sumner Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using tubes, senkos, top water lures, worms and crank baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Night fishing was fair using liver and homemade dough bait for catfish. A few perch were caught by anglers using worms. We had no other reports.
