Catches of the week
- Corrales Drain: Chris Juarez of Albuquerque caught a 4-pound largemouth bass Sept. 3. He was using a Texas rigged senko.
- Elephant Butte Lake: Beau Estrada of Albuquerque caught and released a 4.12-pound smallmouth bass Sept. 9. He was fishing the east side of the lake up from the Butte and using a blue salt craw at 21 feet.
- Fenton Lake: Barbara Wiley, 84, of Albuquerque caught her very first fish and then three more Sept. 10. They were all rainbow trout and she was using a Super Duper.
- Grants River Walk Pond: Aronzo Charley, 10, of Thoreau, caught a 21-inch catfish Sept. 9. He was using Charie’s Type B blood bait.
- Green Meadow Lake: Terry Callaway, 13, of Hobbs, caught his first largemouth bass Sept. 4. He was using a Rebel crawdad crank bait.
- Laguna Del Campo: Armando Duran, 10, of Albuquerque, caught an 18-inch rainbow trout Sept. 9. He was using rainbow PowerBait.
- Lake Farmington: Latana Laken Pinto of Farmington caught a 20-inch smallmouth bass Sept. 5. She was using a drop-shot rig by the dam.
- Red River: Tobias Gabaldon, 6, of Edgewood, caught an 18-inch rainbow trout Sept. 9. He was fishing below the hatchery and using PowerBait.
- Rio Grande River: Jacob Lucero, 9, of Rio Rancho, caught a 20-inch, 5-pound channel catfish Sept. 9. He was using chicken liver.
- Santa Rosa Lake: Brothers Tatum Lowe, 10 and Waylon Lowe, 9, of Albuquerque, each caught a 13-inch smallmouth bass Sept. 9. They were using green crank baits.
- Shuree Ponds: Sebastian Perez of Albuquerque caught a 27-inch rainbow trout Sept. 3. He was using a homemade olive wooly bugger.
- Storrie Lake: Kenny Maestas of Albuquerque caught a 13.5-pound catfish Sept. 9. He was using chicken liver. Frank Garcia of Clayton caught an 11.5-pound catfish Sep. 10. He was using chicken liver.
- Ute Lake: Jim Simpson of Amarillo, Texas, caught and released a 5.34-pound largemouth bass Sept. 9. He was using a fluke.
The following reports came in late but deserve a mention:
- Alto Lake: Joseph Montoya of Capitan caught a 27.5-inch, 8-pound catfish Aug. 31. He was using beef liver.
- Corrales Drain: Chris Juarez of Albuquerque caught a 4-pound largemouth bass Sept. 2. He was using a Texas rigged senko.
- Gila River: Wendy Ibarra of Silver City caught a 28.5-inch catfish Sept. 2. She was using worms.
- Tingley Beach: Dominick Montoya Howland, 9, of Santa Fe, caught a 15-inch catfish Sept. 2. He was fishing the Youth Pond and using hot dogs. Sonny Lopez of Albuquerque caught a 24-inch channel catfish Sept. 4. He was using chicken liver.

Sept. 12
Northeast
Charette Lakes: Fishing was slow.
Clayton Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using chicken liver for catfish. Fishing for all other species was slow.
Cimarron River: Stream flow near Cimarron on Monday was 15.2 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using copper John Barrs and worms for trout. Fishing at the Gravel Pit Lakes was fair using salmon eggs, PowerBait and Pistol Petes.
Conchas Lake: Fishing was fair using tubes, jerk baits, craws, senkos, crank baits, chatter baits and top water lures for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing for white bass was fair using crank baits and spoons. Fishing was fair using tubes, curly tail grubs, spoons and bottom bouncer night crawler rigs for walleye. Fishing was fair to good using shrimp, cut bait and liver for catfish. We had no other reports.
Costilla Creek: Stream flow on Monday below Costilla Dam was 74.1 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Cowles Ponds: Fishing was fair using PowerBait, worms and salmon eggs for trout.
Coyote Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Eagle Rock Lake: Fishing was good using PowerBait, worms, Pistol Petes, salmon eggs, copper John Barrs and spinners for trout.
Eagle Nest Lake: Fishing for trout was fair to good using spinners, Platte River specials and PowerBait. Anglers fishing for trout also reported catching several northern pike in the 15 to 30-inch range. Fishing was very good using worms for perch.
Gallinas River: Fishing was good using worms and Fire Balls for trout.
Hopewell Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Lake Alice: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Lake Maloya: Fishing was good using wooly buggers, parachute Adams, Pistol Petes, marshmallows, Fire Balls and PowerBait for trout. Most of the fly fishing action was reported by anglers fishing along the dam. Fishing was good using worms for perch.
Los Pinos River: Fishing was good using copper John Barrs, wooly buggers, night crawlers and salmon eggs for a mixed bag of brown and rainbow trout.
Maxwell Lake 13: Fishing was slow for all species.
Monastery Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Pecos River: Streamflow near Pecos on Monday was 47.1 cfs. Fishing was good using San Juan worms, bead head prince nymphs, wooly worms, salmon eggs and spinners for trout. The fall fishing season inside the National Historical Park opens September 14 and runs through November 6.
Red River: Stream flow below the hatchery on Monday was 62.1 cfs. Fishing was very good using salmon eggs, PowerBait, worms, wooly buggers, elk hair caddis and spinners for trout.
Red River City Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Rio Grande: Stream flow on Monday at the Taos Junction Bridge was 281 cfs. Fishing was good using poundmeisters, wooly buggers, copper John Barrs, spinners, PowerBait and night crawlers for brown and rainbow trout. Fishing was fair using chicken liver and worms for catfish. We had no other reports.
Rio Hondo: Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 23.9 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using elk hair caddis, copper John Barrs, salmon eggs and worms for trout.
Rio Mora: As of Monday, stream flow near Terrero was 13.9 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Rio Pueblo: Stream flow near Penasco on Monday was 13.8 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Santa Cruz Reservoir: Fishing was slow with just a few trout caught by anglers using PowerBait.
Shuree Ponds: Fishing was good using Pistol Petes and wooly buggers for trout.
Springer Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using worms for perch and worms and cut bait for catfish. We had no other reports.
Storrie Lake: Fishing was slow with just a few catfish caught by anglers using chicken liver.
Stubblefield Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Ute Lake: Fishing was good using stink bait and night crawlers for catfish. Fishing was very good using small plastics and worms for bluegill. Fishing was good using jigging spoons for white bass. The white bass were suspended in about 30 feet of water. Fishing was fair using tubes and grubs in shallow water for walleye. Fishing was slow to fair using flukes, tubes, crank baits, chatter baits and creature baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. The surface water temp was in the mid 70s.
Winsor Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Northwest
Abiquiu Lake: Fishing was good using tubes, grubs, worms, square bill crank baits and top water lures for smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair using tubes, curly tail grubs tipped with night crawlers, bottom bouncer rigs and worm harnesses at 12 to 25 feet for walleye. Bank fishing in the morning hours was good using worms for bluegill. We had no other reports.
Animas River: Water flow below Aztec on Monday morning was 93.2 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
Albuquerque Area Drains: Fishing was fair to good using worms for bluegill and catfish. We received good reports again this week from both the Belen Drain and the Albuquerque Drain. Anglers also reported catching largemouth bass in the Albuquerque Drain and Corrales Drain. They were using small tubes and worms.
Bluewater Lake: Fishing was using large flies, swim baits, large tubes, crank baits and hot dogs for tiger muskies. We had no other reports.
Brazos River: Fishing was fair to good using copper John Barrs, small prince nymphs, small dry flies and worms for trout.
Canjilon Lakes: Closed by the U.S. Forest Service until further notice.
Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 714 cfs and 802 cfs respectively. Fishing below El Vado was fair to good using wooly buggers, night crawlers, Fire Balls and PowerBait for brown and rainbow trout. Fishing below Abiquiu was slow. New Special Trout Water: The river from the USGS gauging station to the confluence of the Rio Nutrias is now catch and release only using single barbless hook artificial flies and lures.
Cochiti Lake: Fishing was fair using chatter baits, spinner baits, tubes, senkos and jerk baits for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was fair using shrimp, chicken liver and homemade dough bait for catfish. We had no other reports.
El Vado Lake: Fishing was fair using PowerBait and spinners for rainbow trout. A few bass were caught by anglers using tubes and jigs. We had no other reports.
Fenton Lake: Fishing was good using Pistol Petes, Rooster Tails, Super Dupers, Panther Martin spinners, Fire Bait, PowerBait and worms for trout.
Heron Lake: Bank fishing was fair to good using salmon eggs, PowerBait and spinners for rainbow trout. A few were also caught by anglers trolling spinners around the island. We had no other reports.
Jackson Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez River near Jemez Springs on Monday morning was 13.4 cfs. Trout fishing on the Jemez was good for anglers using copper John Barrs, bead-head pheasant tail nymphs, worms and salmon eggs. Fishing on the Cebolla was very good using worms, Fire Balls and yellow PowerBait. Fishing on the San Antonio was good using worms, salmon eggs, terrestrials, elk hair caddis and small spinners. We had no other reports.
Laguna Del Campo: Fishing was good using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout.
Lagunitas Lakes: Fishing was good using Fire Balls, PowerBait, Pistol Petes and spinners for trout.
Lake Farmington: Fishing was slow but there were a few bass caught by anglers using crank baits and drop shot rigs.
Manzano Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Navajo Lake: Fishing was good using tubes, curly tail grubs, crank baits, jerk baits and top water lures for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was good using topwater lures, chatter baits, jerk baits and crank baits for northern pike. Fishing was very good using worms, grubs and small crank baits for perch. A few rainbow trout were caught by anglers using PowerBait and marshmallows. We had no other reports.
San Gregorio Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
San Juan River: Stream flow on Monday morning was 761 cfs. Fly fishing action through the Quality waters was good for anglers using RS2s, root beers, jujus, emergers, red annelids, San Juan worms, dead chickens, Adams, comparaduns and small bead-head pheasant tail nymphs. Trout fishing through the bait waters was fair to good using night crawlers, PowerBait, San Juan worms, jerk baits, wooly buggers and Panther Martin spinners.
Seven Springs Brood Pond: Fishing was very good using PowerBait, salmon eggs, Fire Balls, worms and Pistol Petes for trout.
Tingley Beach: Fishing was good using hot dogs, worms, chicken liver, beef liver and shrimp for channel catfish. We had no other reports.
Trout Lakes: Fishing was very slow.
Southwest
Alumni Pond: Fishing was fair to good using hot dogs, beef liver and night crawlers for catfish. We had no other reports.
Bear Canyon Lake: Fishing was fair using worms for bluegill and an occasional catfish. We had no other reports.
Bill Evans Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Caballo Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.
Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing was fair to good using cut bait, shrimp, night crawlers and chicken liver for catfish. Fishing was fair using senkos, flukes, craws, jerk baits, buzz baits, Pop Rs and crank baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing was fair using crank baits, spoons and curly tail grubs for white bass. Fishing for walleye was slow with just a few caught by anglers using crank baits. We had no other reports.
Escondida Lake: Fishing was fair using hot dogs, chicken liver, homemade dough bait and cut bait for catfish. We had no other reports.
Gila River: Stream flow on Monday morning was 51.2 cfs. Mike Ybarra of Silver City reported that his wife, Wendy, son Brenden and daughter Breanna all caught nice catfish this past week. They were using worms. We had no other reports.
Glenwood Pond: Fishing was good using PowerBait and Fire Balls for trout.
Lake Roberts: Fishing was slow to fair using tubes, crank baits, senkos and night crawlers for largemouth bass. Fishing was slow to fair using shrimp, homemade dough bait and night crawlers for catfish. Bluegill fishing was good for anglers using worms. We had no other reports.
Percha Dam: Fishing was fair using minnows, spinners and curly tail grubs for walleye. Fishing was fair to good using liver and homemade dough bait for catfish. We had no other reports.
Quemado Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Rancho Grande Ponds: Fishing was fair using worms and hot dogs for catfish. Fishing was fair using worms for bluegill.
Rio Grande: Stream flow below Elephant Butte Monday morning was 1,170 cfs. Fishing below Elephant Butte and Caballo was fair to good using night crawlers, shrimp, beef liver, chicken liver and cut bait for catfish. Fishing was slow to fair using curly tail grubs, spoons and minnows for white bass. We had no other reports.
Snow Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Young Pond: Fishing was slow to fair using worms, liver and hot dogs for catfish. We had no other reports.
Southeast
Alto Lake: Fishing was fair using stink bait, night crawlers and beef liver for catfish. We had no other reports.
Bataan Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Black River: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 6.74 cfs. We had no reports from anglers.
Blue Hole Park Pond: Fishing was fair using worms and homemade dough bait for catfish.
Bonito Lake: Closed until further notice by the city of Alamogordo due to fire damage.
Bosque Redondo Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using chicken liver for catfish. We had no other reports.
Bottomless Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Brantley Lake: Anglers are required to catch and release all fish here as high levels of pesticides have been found in some fish. Fishing was good using top water lures, crank baits, flukes, tubes, senkos, craws and jerk baits for largemouth bass and white bass. We had no other reports.
Carlsbad Municipal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Chaparral Park Lake: Fishing was fair using worms and hot dogs for catfish.
El Rito Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Eunice Lake: Fishing was fair using night crawlers and stink bait for catfish.
Green Meadow Lake: Fishing was fair using hot dogs, worms, homemade dough bait and chicken liver for catfish. We had no other reports.
Greene Acres Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using chicken liver, worms and homemade dough bait for catfish. We had no other reports.
Grindstone Reservoir: Roger Schoolcraft reported that the fishing opportunities have been very good and especially so for the fly fisherman early and late in the day. He was using wooly buggers, small poppers and weighted nymphs and catching trout, smallmouth bass and perch. A few trout were also caught by anglers using PowerBait.
Jal Lake: Fishing was fair using worms and hot dogs for catfish. We had no other reports.
Lake Van: We had no reports from anglers this week.
Oasis Park Lake: Fishing was good using worms, hot dogs, homemade dough bait and punch bait for catfish.
Pecos River: Stream flow below Sumner Lake on Monday was 99.7 cfs. Fishing was fair to good using chicken liver, night crawlers and hot dogs for catfish. We had no other reports.
Perch Lake: Fishing was fair to good using hot dogs and homemade dough bait for catfish. We had no other reports.
Ruidoso River: Stream flow at Hollywood was 14.9 cfs. Fishing was fair using salmon eggs for trout.
Santa Rosa Lake: Fishing was good using crank baits, tubes, worms and jerk baits for smallmouth bass. Fishing was slow to fair using chicken liver and night crawlers for catfish. We had no other reports.
Sumner Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using tubes, senkos, chatter baits and crank baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Night fishing was fair using liver and homemade dough bait for catfish. We had no other reports.
