SFPS Announces New Capital High Girls Varsity Basketball Coach

Santa Fe Public Schools announces the appointment of Darren Casados as the interim head coach for varsity girls basketball at Capital High School (CHS).

Hilario (Larry Jr.) Chavez, Santa Fe Public Schools athletics & activities director, stated, “Darren comes with deep ties and historic accomplishments as an athlete at CHS. We are looking forward to seeing Darren on the court once again and providing the guidance this program requires to move it in a positive direction.”

Casados began his coaching career as top varsity assistant at Santa Fe Preparatory School from 2011-15 where he helped lead the Griffins to a 91-27 record, with three district championships, and four state tournament appearances.  He joined SFPS as the Nina Otero Community School 8th grade boys basketball coach in 2015.  He coached at Nina Otero through 2017 where his teams were highly successful (19-7). Many of his former middle school student-athletes now attend Capital High School.

Casados explained, “I am excited and humbled at the opportunity to guide the Lady Jaguars to our next level of success.” Coach Casados added, “I want to give back to the school, students and community that afforded me a commitment to excellence.”

“We are excited about the leadership and commitment Mr.Casados will bring to the head coaching position of the Lady Jaguars.  We know he will make it an exciting and successful year for the team,” stated Superintendent Veronica C. Garcia.

Casados was born and raised in Santa Fe.  He attended Carlos Gilbert Elementary, De Vargas Junior High and graduated from Capital High School in 1993.  During his tenure at Capital High School, Casados established himself as one of the greatest student athletes in their 29 year history.  Upon graduation Casados attended Eastern New Mexico University on a full-ride basketball scholarship, making the dean’s list.  Later he transferred to New Mexico State University.

Casados is a 19 year employee of the State of New Mexico Department of Transportation, District Five office, serving as construction auditor of highway construction projects within six counties.  He is married to Jolene and is extremely proud of his three daughters, two sons and one grandson.
