St. Michael’s shuts down Bernalillo, Capital High loses to Lovington, Santa Fe Indian School becomes first Pojoaque Valley victim in six starts

Santa Fe High losing skein becomes 29 in defeat up at Los Alamos

Pojoaque Valley finally found its way to the win column, Capital High went back-and-forth before losing to Lovington, and St. Michael’s had no problem dominating Bernalillo.

The Elks played host to Santa Fe Indian School Saturday afternoon with an 0-5 record, had been outscored 8-186, but managed to edge the Braves, 8-6, in District 2-4A play. Pojoaque broke the scoreless tie with a touchdown in the third quarter and tacked on a 2-point conversation.

The Braves, who lost their second in row after winning their first four, scored a TD in the fourth quarter but did not convert the PAT. Friday night, they play at West Las Vegas, while the Elks meet up with Bernalillo. Both are district games.

Capital dropped to 2-4 overall after falling behind early in the non district visit from the Wildcats (3-3), taking the lead at 13-7 and then being outscored 16-0 in the second half in the 23-13 loss.

The Jaguars begin District 2-5A at Albuquerque Del Norte (1-5) Saturday afternoon. To gain a post-season berth, they are going to have to win district.

Del Norte won for the first time by rolling over winless Albuquerque Rio Grande, which lost for the 32nd straight time.

As for St. Michael’s, it won its fourth of five starts against the visiting Spartans (1-5). The Horsemen scored once in the opening quarter and converted the point-after. In the second quarter, they upped the margin with three more TDs, and led 28-0 at halftime.

They scored twice more in the third quarter as Andrew Salazar was 6-of-6 in PATs. The running clock began in the fourth quarter. Friday night, they get a tough test up at District 2-4A opponent Taos (1-5), which lost at undefeated Las Vegas Robertson Friday night.

At Los Alamos Friday night, Santa Fe High lost its 29th in a row with a 21-14 setback. It was 14-14 at the half and the Hilltoppers (4-2) scored in the fourth quarter and the held off a late bid by the Demons (0-6), who are playing an independent schedule and wind down with home games against undefeated 5A Escalante (5-0), Roswell (3-2) and 6A Clovis.
