New Mexico Weekly Fishing and Stocking Report

Catches of the week

  • Heron Lake: Aaron Suazo caught a 22-inch rainbow trout Nov. 27. He was using a white shad swim bait.
  • Lake Maloya: Jessica Pargament of Raton caught a 20-inch rainbow trout Dec. 4. She was using yellow PowerBait.
  • Rio Grande: Andrew Black of Santa Fe caught and released a 38-inch northern pike Dec. 3. He was fly fishing and using a bunny streamer.

Northeast

Charette Lakes: Closed for the season.

Clayton Lake:  Closed for the season.

Cimarron River: Stream flow near Cimarron on Monday was 8.43 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Conchas Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using spoons and blade baits for white bass and walleye. We had no other reports. The surface water temp was in the mid 50s.

Costilla Creek: Stream flow on Monday below Costilla Dam was 1.23 cfs. Check this one out next spring.

Cowles Ponds: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Coyote Creek: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eagle Rock Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Eagle Nest Lake: Fishing was good using PowerBait and spinners for rainbow trout up to 23 inches in length. We had a report of one 24-inch northern pike caught by an angler fishing for trout. Fishing for all other species was slow. Kokanee snagging was slow. Fishing pressure was light. The boat docks have been pulled but anglers can still launch boats.

Gallinas River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Hopewell Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Alice: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Maloya: Trout fishing was fair to good using PowerBait, salmon eggs, Pistol Petes and Joes flies for trout.

Los Pinos River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Maxwell Lake 13: Closed for the season.

Monastery Lake: Fishing was good using PowerBait, worms and Fire Balls for trout.

Morphy Lake:  Closed for the season.

Pecos River: Streamflow near Pecos on Monday was 41.4 cfs. Fishing was fair using San Juan worms, small leech patterns, salmon eggs and worms for brown and rainbow trout.

Red River: Stream flow below the hatchery on Monday was 62.1 cfs. Fishing was fair using PowerBait, worms, salmon eggs and copper John Barrs for trout.

Red River City Ponds: Closed for the season.

Rio Grande: Stream flow on Monday at the Taos Junction Bridge was 693 cfs. Fishing above Taos was fair using wooly buggers, bunny leeches, San Juan worms and earth worms for brown and rainbow trout. Fishing was slow to fair using bunny leeches and large streamers for northern pike. Fishing through the Albuquerque area was slow with just a few catfish caught by anglers using chicken liver and homemade dough baits. We had no other reports.

Rio Hondo: Stream flow near Valdez on Monday was 16.1 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Mora: As of Monday, stream flow near Terrero was 9.5 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rio Pueblo: Stream flow near Penasco on Monday was 15.0 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Santa Cruz Reservoir: Fishing was slow. Fishing pressure was very light.

Shuree Ponds:  We had no reports from anglers this week.

Springer Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Storrie Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using Fire Balls and PowerBait for trout. Fishing for catfish was slow.

Stubblefield Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Ute Lake: Fishing for walleye continued slow with just a few caught by anglers using spoons and blade baits at 35 to 42 feet. White bass fishing picked up a bit as anglers reported catching a few at about 35 feet. They were using blade baits. We had no other reports. The surface water temp was in the low to mid 50s and the water was murky.

Northwest

Abiquiu Lake: Fishing was fair using PowerBait, worms and crank baits for trout. Fishing was slow to fair using jigs and blade baits for walleye. Most of the walleye were caught at depths of 18 to 28 feet. Fishing for smallmouth bass was slow to fair for anglers using grubs, tubes and worms. We had no other reports.

Animas River: Water flow below Aztec on Monday morning was 276 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Albuquerque Area Drains: Fishing in the Albuquerque, Albuquerque South, Bernalillo and Peralta drains was good using worms, PowerBait, Fire Balls and custom tied nymphs for trout. We had no reports on other species.

Bluewater Lake: Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait, salmon eggs and worms for trout. Fishing for tiger muskies and catfish was slow.

Brazos River: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Canjilon Lakes: Closed by the U.S. Forest Service until further notice.

Chama River: Monday morning water flows below El Vado and Abiquiu were 591 cfs and 940 cfs respectively. Fishing above El Vado was fair to good using bead-head nymphs, PowerBait and worms for brown and rainbow trout. Fishing below El Vado was good using wooly buggers, Kastmasters, Rapalas, night crawlers and Fire Balls for brown and rainbow trout. We had no reports from below Abiquiu. The river from the USGS gauging station to the confluence of the Rio Nutrias is now catch and release only using single barbless hook artificial flies and lures.

Cochiti Lake: Fishing was slow for all species.

El Vado Lake: Fishing was slow. Fishing pressure was very light.

Fenton Lake: Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait, Fire Balls, wooly buggers, Pistol Petes and worms for brown and rainbow trout.

Heron Lake: Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait swim baits and salmon eggs from the bank for rainbow trout. Kokanee snagging was slow. We had no other reports.

Jackson Lake: Fishing was good using small PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Jemez Waters: Stream flow on the Jemez River near Jemez Springs on Monday morning was 21.1 cfs. Fishing on the Jemez was fair using copper John Barrs, Fire Balls and worms for trout. We had no other reports.

Laguna del Campo: Closed for the season.

Lagunitas Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Farmington: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Manzano Lake: Fishing was fair to good using garlic PowerBait, Gulp eggs, salmon egg corn combinations, salmon eggs and worms for trout. We had no other reports.

Navajo Lake: Fishing was slow to fair using plastic worms, grubs, senkos, Ben rigs and swim baits worked slow for smallmouth bass and largemouth bass. Fishing was slow to fair using swim baits for northern pike. Kokanee snagging was slow. We had no other reports.

San Gregorio Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

San Juan River: Stream flow on Monday morning was 369 cfs. Fly fishing action through the Quality waters was good for anglers using rootbeers, brassies, small fluff baetis, crystal flash emergers, RS2, comparaduns, red larva, parachute adams and small bead-head pheasant tail nymphs. There have been some decent BWO hatches in the early afternoon hours on cloudy days. Trout fishing through the bait waters was fair using salmon eggs, PowerBait, worms, prince nymphs, copper John Barrs, bead-head pheasant tail nymphs and jerk baits. A river enhancement project will begin on Dec. 15 from the Simon Point Day-Use Area downriver to the Crusher Hole Day-Use Area. Seven Springs Brood Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Tingley Beach: Fishing at the Youth and Central ponds continued to be very good this past week as anglers did very well using PowerBait, salmon eggs, mop flies, Pistol Petes, wooly buggers and bead-head pheasant tail nymphs for trout. Fishing at the Bob Gerding Catch and Release Pond was good using small leech patterns, San Juan worms, small midge patterns and custom tied mop flies for trout. We had no other reports.

Trout Lakes: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Southwest

Alumni Pond: Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Bear Canyon Lake: Fishing was fair using Fire Balls, worms and PowerBait for trout. We had no other reports.

Bill Evans Lake: Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. Fishing was good using homemade dough bait and liver for catfish. Fishing for all other species was slow.

Caballo Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Elephant Butte Lake: Fishing was fair to good using blade baits, spoons, curly tail grubs and jig and minnow combinations for white bass. Anglers fishing for white bass also picked up a few walleye. Fishing was slow to fair using Ned rigs, jigs, curly tail grubs, worms and creature baits for largemouth bass and smallmouth bass. Fishing was good using cut bait, live bait, night crawlers, liver and homemade dough baits for catfish. We had no other reports. The surface water temp ranged from the high 50s to the low 60s.

Escondida Lake: Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait and Fire Balls for trout. We had no other reports.

Gila River: Stream flow on Monday morning was 57.3 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Glenwood Pond: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Roberts: Fishing was fair using worms, liver and homemade dough bait for catfish. Fishing was fair to good using Fire Balls and PowerBait for trout. We had no other reports.

Percha Dam: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Quemado Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Rancho Grande Ponds: Fishing was slow to fair using PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Rio Grande: Stream flow below Elephant Butte Monday morning was 0.00 cfs. Fishing was fair using liver and stink bait for catfish. Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait for trout. We had no other reports.

Snow Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Young Pond: Trout fishing was good mid-week but tapered off over the weekend. Best baits were PowerBait and Fire Balls.

Southeast

Alto Lake: Fishing was good using Pistol Petes, spinners, PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout.

Bataan Lake: Fishing was fair using PowerBait, worms and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Black River: Stream flow at Malaga on Monday was 13.0 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.

Blue Hole Park Pond: Fishing was very good using worms, PowerBait and Fire Balls for trout.

Bonito Lake: Closed until further notice by the city of Alamogordo due to fire damage.

Bosque Redondo Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Bottomless Lakes: Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait and Fire Balls for trout.

Brantley Lake: Anglers are required to catch and release all fish here as high levels of pesticides have been found in some fish. Fishing was fair to good using swim baits, jigs, curly tail grubs and Ben rigs for a mix of largemouth bass and white bass.

Carlsbad Municipal Lake: Fishing was good using small Kastmasters, PowerBait, salmon eggs and worms for trout. We had no other reports.

Chaparral Park Lake: Fishing was good using salmon eggs and PowerBait for trout.

El Rito Creek: Fishing was fair to good using PowerBait for trout. We had no other reports.

Eunice Lake: Fishing was good using PowerBait and salmon egg corn combinations for trout.

Green Meadow Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Greene Acres Lake: Fishing was very good using spinners, PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout. We had no other reports.

Grindstone Reservoir: Fishing was good using small bead-head nymphs, Pistol Petes, PowerBait and worms for trout. We had no other reports.

Jal Lake: We had no reports from anglers this week.

Lake Van: Fishing was fair using Pistol Petes, PowerBait and salmon eggs for trout.

Oasis Park Lake: Fishing was very good using salmon eggs and salmon peach and garlic PowerBait for trout. We had no other reports.

Pecos River: Stream flow below Sumner Lake on Monday was 14.7 cfs. Fishing was good using PowerBait and Fire Balls for trout. We had no other reports.

Perch Lake: Fishing was fair to good using Pistol Petes, PowerBait and Fire Balls for trout.

Ruidoso River: Stream flow at Hollywood was 4.72 cfs. We had no reports from anglers this week.
